Game Story
The Manitoba Moose (2-1-0-0) dropped their first game of the season 2-1 to the Grand Rapids Griffins (1-1-1-0) on Friday night at Van Andel Arena. Manitoba was coming off an 8-3 win over the Chicago Wolves on Sunday.
The first goal of the contest was a long time coming, with almost 16 minutes elapsing before anyone could break the deadlock. Cameron Butler finished off a pass from Kienan Draper to give the Griffins a 1-0 edge. Grand Rapids killed off a penalty in the late going of the frame to take their 1-0 lead into the locker room. Michal Postava made nine stops in the period, while Domenic DiVincentiis made 12 in the Moose goal.
Grand Rapids extended its lead to 2-0 two minutes into the second. William Lagesson broke in wide, and stuffed a shot between DiVincentiis and the goalpost. The Moose took over from there. They outshot the Griffins 16-5 the rest of the period, but Postava made multiple big stops, holding Manitoba goalless, maintaining the two-goal lead into the break.
The Moose held a narrow 12-11 edge on the shot clock in the third, eking their way back into the game. Noah Gregor potted his third goal of the season at 4:17, deking around a defender before outwaiting Postava to plant a backhander into the open cage. Grand Rapids killed off another penalty inside of seven minutes to play, and the Moose couldn’t muster a game-tying goal before the final horn. Postava made 36 stops, willing his side to a 2-1 victory.Â
