Back in a Big Way

Defenceman Dylan Coghlan returned to the lineup Saturday after a five-game absence. Coghlan made his presence felt with three assists in the third period. The trifecta marks a season-high for Coghlan and the second three-point game of his campaign. It’s also the second time this season the Duncan, B.C. product has factored in on three Moose goals in a period after he posted a goal and two assists in the opening frame of a 7-2 Moose win on Feb. 9 against Iowa. Coghlan is second among Moose defenders with 17 points (8G, 9A) in 19 games, and leads the Moose with a .89 points per game average. That mark ranks fourth among AHL defencemen.

This Mason Builds Wins

Forward Mason Shaw scored twice in the third period, lifting Manitoba to the win yesterday. It was Shaw’s first multi-goal performance of the season and fourth multi-point effort of the campaign. The Wainright, Alta. product has six points (3G, 3A) over his past five contests, while racking up 16 shots in that span. Shaw’s two-goal afternoon moves him into a tie with Brad Lambert for the team scoring lead at 27 points (13G, 14A). He is third on the Moose in goals and game-winning tallies.

Picking Up PIMs

The Moose rank second in the AHL with 854 penalty minutes on the season. That’s an average of 15.8 PIMs per game, but despite their high penalty minute ranking, the Moose have surrendered the 10th-fewest power play chances against.  Manitoba is one of only two teams with multiple players among the AHL’s top-20 most penalized players. The Moose are the only team with three players in the top-20, and only squad with four players in the top-25. Mark Liwiski leads the team with 115 minutes in the sin bin, followed by Tyrel Bauer (95), Mason Shaw (89) and Tyson Empey (85). With two fighting major penalties in yesterday’s game, the Moose are tied with Laval for the most major penalties in league at 36 on the season.

On The Board

Danny Zhilkin nabbed his first goal of the season in yesterday’s contest. The tally came one game after Fabian Wagner scored his first of the campaign and four games after Ryan Chyzowski also scored his first. Zhilkin has three goals in his AHL career, with two tallies scored against Calgary. The Moscow, Russia product has two points (1G, 1A) over his past three games. Zhilkin was a third round pick (77th overall) of the Winnipeg Jets in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Who's Trending?

Fabian Wagner didn’t waste any time scoring his second career AHL goal, just one game after his first. The tally gives Wagner points in three consecutive games. The Nykoping, Sweden product matched a season high with three shots on goal in the win. The 2022 Winnipeg Jets sixth round selection has five points (2G, 3A) in 33 games this season.
