Freij-yay

The Winnipeg Jets reassigned Alfons Freij from Timrå of the SHL to the Moose on Wednesday afternoon, bringing the young blueliner to North America. The Sölvesborg, Sweden native’s SHL season came to a conclusion on Saturday night, with Freij recording 11 points (6G, 5A) through 42 games. He won a gold medal with Sweden at the 2026 World Juniors with fellow Jets prospect Sasha Boumedienne, recording seven assists in seven games. Freij was a second round pick of the Jets in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Going Back-to-Back

The Moose have played 17 back-to-back games this season. Thursday evening marks their 18th such contest. Overall, Manitoba is 9-5-3-0 in the second half of back-to-backs, winning four of the six they’ve played on home ice. In their only other game following their school day game earlier this season, they recorded a 5-1 win over the Belleville Senators. The Moose have won two of their past three games at home in the back-half of the back-to-back, claiming a pair of victories over the Rockford IceHogs. Mason Shaw leads the Moose with 15 points (6G, 9A) in back-to-backs, with four other skaters at 10 points or more. Domenic DiVincentiis owns a 3-0-1 record, with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

Home for a Rest

Manitoba has played 29 games at Canada Life Centre in 2025-26, amassing a 14-10-2-1 record. A total of 10 players have recorded at least 10 points in those games. Mason Shaw leads the way with 17 points (6G, 11A). Manitoba has nine home games left on its schedule, with three to come against Milwaukee, and two against the Tucson Roadrunners, Grand Rapids Griffins, and Texas Stars. Five of those contests have 7 p.m. CT start times, while the remaining four are all slated to drop the puck at 2 p.m. CT. The Moose will host their final home game of the season on April 12 against the Stars, before hitting the road for their final three games of the campaign.

First One Counts

The Moose have scored the first goal of the game in 32 of their 55 contests in 2025-26, going on to produce a 22-6-3-1 record in those games. Manitoba has fired the opening salvo the 10th-most times of any team in the AHL. Three skaters are tied for the team lead in ‘first goals’, with Mason Shaw, Brayden Yager and Samuel Fagemo all at five apiece. When leading after 20 minutes, the Moose are 12-2-1-1, and are 16-1-3-1 when they hold an edge after two periods of play.

Isaak Phillips hasn’t gone more than two games without recording a point since Dec. 21, bringing his season total to 23 points (8G, 15A). The mark is good for the top spot among Moose blueliners. The Barrie, Ont. product sits just two points off his career high. Phillips was a fifth round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2020 NHL Draft.
