The Manitoba Moose (11-20-1-1) seek to begin a new winning streak today (2 p.m. CT) when they host the Toronto Marlies (19-10-2-3) at Canada Life Centre. Toronto came away with a 3-0 win over the Moose the previous time out as Matt Murray made 23 saves for the Marlies. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak and halted a run of five consecutive games with a point for the Moose.

Feeling Special

The Moose saw a run of three consecutive games scoring power play goals come to an end on Friday. Over Manitoba’s four-game winning streak, the team scored two game-winners while on the man-advantage. A total of 11 Moose skaters have factored in on a power play goal this season, and Nikita Chibrikov is at the top of the leaderboard with eight power play points so far in the campaign. On the other side, Manitoba’s penalty kill hasn’t allowed a goal in the past five outings, going 14 for 14 in that span. The Moose are tied for ninth in the AHL in shorthanded goals, having scored five times when down a skater. Four different Manitoba skaters have recorded a shorthanded goal this season. Parker Ford leads the team with two shorthanded tallies.

One Going On Two Hundred

Defenceman Isaak Phillips made his Moose debut Friday. The contest also marked the defender’s 200th AHL game, having appeared in 199 games with the Rockford IceHogs prior to being acquired via trade. Phillips recorded 79 points (23G, 56A) through the first 200 games of his AHL career. The Barrie, Ont. export becomes the fifth skater to play their 200th AHL game with the Moose this season. Phillips brings 56 games of NHL experience to Manitoba’s blueline, having recorded 12 points (2G, 10A) with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Last Line of Defence

Kaapo Kähkönen made 27 stops on 29 shots in his third consecutive start with the Moose on Friday night. The Finnish goaltender has allowed two or less goals in each of his past three performances. Kähkönen posted a .931 SV% in Friday’s contest, which is his third-highest recorded as a member of the Moose, following his shutout performance the game prior, and a .971 SV% against the Rockford IceHogs on Dec. 20. Kähkönen’s performance Friday was the highest save-percentage the goaltender recorded in a loss this season.

Answering the Call

The Moose announced Friday the team recalled forward Ryan Chyzowski from the organization’s ECHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals. The Kamloops, BC product has posted 21 points (8G, 13A) in 29 games with the Admirals this season, including six multi-point efforts. He’s recorded 88 points (43G, 45A) in 107 career ECHL contests. Chyzowski recorded a career-high 30 points (17G, 13A) in 44 games with the Reading Royals during the 2023-24 season. Chyzowski also posted eight points (7G, 1A) in 59 career AHL matchups, skating with the Toronto Marlies from 2021-2023.
