True North Sports & Entertainment Limited is pleased to once again welcome the National Hockey League back to the MTS Centre for an exhibition game between the Phoenix Coyotes and Calgary Flames on Wednesday, September 24th, 2008. Game time will be 7:30 p.m.
This will be the third straight season the Coyotes have played an exhibition game at the MTS Centre. Just last September 19th, Head Coach Wayne Gretzky brought his team to Winnipeg to face the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of just over 13,000 fans. However, the Leafs beat captain Shane Doan and the Coyotes that night 3-2.
The Coyotes feature one of the younger, more exciting line-ups in the NHL with the likes of Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal, and last year’s first-round draft choice Kyle Turris along with captain Shane Doan. The Flames counter with such top-tiered talent as Norris Trophy nominee defenceman Dion Phaneuf, captain Jarome Iglinla, and Winnipegger Dustin Boyd.
This will be the fifth time Winnipeg has hosted an NHL exhibition game since 1997, and the third straight year the Coyotes have done so. Back on September 19th, 2002, the Oilers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Vancouver Canucks in front of 13,223 fans at the old Winnipeg Arena. Then on September 11th, 2003, the Minnesota Wild beat the Canucks 1-0 in front of 10,214. Two seasons ago, the Edmonton Oilers shutout the Coyotes 5-0 on September 17th, 2006 at the MTS Centre.
