MANITOBA DOWNS HAMILTON IN 2-1 OVERTIME DECISION

By Christina Caligiuri

The Manitoba Moose earned a franchise-high 48th win on Friday night with a 2-1 overtime decision over the Hamilton Bulldogs at the MTS Centre. Jason Krog scored Manitoba’s lone goal in regulation time while Nolan Baumgartner notched the game-winner in overtime. Goaltender Cory Schneider made Moose history by stopping 35 shots to earn his 27th win – the most wins in a single season by any Moose goaltender.

After back and forth play for almost 10 straight minutes, Hamilton opened the scoring on their second shot of the night. With a collage of players’ in front of Cory Schneider’s crease, Ryan Russell wired the puck through the traffic to put the Bulldogs up by one.

Manitoba’s powerplay unit made their debut at 10:17 when Yannick Weber was put away hooking. Despite testing goaltender Marc Denis three times, the Moose weren’t able to capitalize during the two minute advantage.

Nathan McIver’s holding call midway through the game put the Bulldogs on their first powerplay. The visitors were able to bring their shot count to 12 on the man-advantage, but couldn’t break Schneider before play returned to five-on-five.

McIver added a high-sticking penalty to his record with 1:29 remaining in the second period but it was cut short when Brock Trotter was penalized for interference. The Bulldogs failed to score on their powerplay but Manitoba capitalized and broke their goose-egg. With a pass from the back of the net, Matt Pope backhanded the puck towards the goal, where it was redirected by Jason Krog to knot the game at one.

With 8:15 left in the game, Captain Mike Keane gave the visitors their fourth man-advantage with a high-sticking penalty. With pivotal saves by Schneider and effective penalty killing, the Moose killed-off the disadvantage unharmed.

With Hamilton leading in shots, 35-17, both teams failed to notch another goal and the game was forced into overtime.

Overtime

With three minutes left in overtime, the Moose firmly planted themselves in the Bulldogs zone. Nolan Baumgartner slapped the puck top shelf on Denis and claimed the victory with a 2-1 win.
