MANITOBA FINISHES SEASON SERIES 3-1-0-0 VS. QUAD CITY

By Christina Caligiuri

After winning three consecutive games over Quad City this season, the visiting Flames beat the Moose in their last regular season match-up 2-1 at the MTS Centre on Saturday night. Alexandre Bolduc netted the lone Moose goal, while Karl Goehring blocked 24 shots in his seventh consecutive start.

First Period

For the seventh consecutive game goaltender Karl Goehring manned the pipes for Manitoba, while Quad City opted to change goaltenders after last night’s loss, starting Leland Irving.

It only took the Moose 4:15 seconds to break Irving, when Alexandre Bolduc went top corner on the net minder to put the home team in the game’s first lead.

After the goal, the Flames were forced to play the subsequent two-minutes short, when Carsen Germyn was put away for interference. The Moose were unable to capitalize on their first powerplay, but racked up eight shots to the Flames one.

At 16:05 John Armstrong’s hooking penalty put the Moose on their second five-on-four of the night, but Manitoba failed to register more than one shot on Irving and maintained their 1-0 lead heading into the second.

Second Period

The visitors benefited from their first powerplay at 6:07 of the middle frame when Mark Fistric was called out for interference. Manitoba’s penalty killers, first in the AHL, blocked all opposing opportunities and not only maintained their scoring lead but their shot lead at 15-11.

At the mid-way point of the game, the Flames saw themselves on their second powerplay when Guillaume Desbiens was sent to the bin for elbowing. However, Carsen Germyn and Jamie Lundmark’s consecutive penalties 16 seconds later put the Moose back on the advantage.

After both Flames penalties expired, Alexandre Bolduc’s goaltender interference fine put the Moose back on the defense. Poised at the point, Jamie Lundmark slapped it passed Goehring to knot the game at one.

At 16:43 a fired up Alexandre Bolduc squared off with Quad City’s Ryan Wilson and landed a handful of lefts and rights before both parties were sentenced with five-minute fighting majors.

Third Period

The Flames earned the lead a mere 1:47 into the final frame when Aki Seitsonen nailed the puck past Goehring, 2-1.

Even with 25 shots a piece, the tempo of play heightened in the final minutes with both teams hungry for another goal.  Both sides couldn’t satisfy their craving and the Flames beat the Moose for the first time this season, 2-1.
