MANITOBA SPLITS SEASON SERIES WITH SAN ANTONIO

By Christina Caligiuri

The San Antonio Rampage defeated the Manitoba Moose 1-0 Sunday night, splitting the four-game season series between both clubs. San Antonio’s Brett MacLean scored the game’s lone goal, while Karl Goehring blocked 29 of 30 attempts. With the loss, Manitoba split their Texas road trip and will carry a two-game skid into Friday’s home game vs. Grand Rapids.

First Period

Josh Tordjman resumed his goaltending duties for the Rampage, while the Moose opted to switch tenders with Karl Goehring manning the pipes.

With a mere 49 seconds into the game, the Texas club benefited from the first powerplay when Zack FitzGerald was put away for cross-checking. Manitoba’s penalty killers looked sharp as they terminated the two-minutes without allowing a single shot on Goehring.

San Antonio saw themselves back on the man-advantage at 8:44 when Captain Mike Keane was penalized for hooking. Manitoba penalty killers, second in the AHL, successfully kept the Rampage away from the net and the home squad went zero for two on the PP.

Trevor Ludwig’s hooking fine gave the Rampage their third powerplay of the game, but like the other two, San Antonio was unable to crack Goehring and the game remained scoreless after the first frame.

Second Period

The Rampage’s 16-4 shot lead quickly translated into a goal lead at 7:04 into the second stanza. With a scramble in front of Goehring, Brett MacLean found the back of the net and put his team in the first lead of the game, 1-0.

The two clubs’ exchanged penalties near the midway point of the game, but neither team could maximize on their respective opportunities. More than doubling up the Moose in shots, 25-9, the home team held onto their one goal lead entering the final frame.

Third Period

Alex Bourret’s high-sticking penalty at 2:38 into the third, put the Moose on the powerplay for the second time of the night, but Michel Ouellet evened the odds with a slashing call at 3:04.

Before the Rampage could get a crack at their sixth powerplay chance, Joakim Lindstrom was sent to the sin bin for cross-checking to put the man-advantage back in the visitors’ hands.

With Goehring out of his net and the Moose equipped with an extra-attacker, the visitors fired an array of shots in the final minute to try and knot the game. However, time would expire before the Moose could break Tordjman and the Rampage stole their second game from the Moose, 1-0.
