MANITOBA SITS FOURTH IN NORTH DIVISION WITH 81 POINTS

By Christina Caligiuri

The Manitoba Moose dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to the Toronto Marlies in front of 3,934 fans at the Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Guillaume Desbiens scored Manitoba’s lone goal in regulation time while Cory Schneider stopped  30 of 31 shots in the loss. By earning one point, the Moose can clinch a playoff spot tonight if Lake Erie losses to Peoria.

For the second consecutive day, Cory Schneider and James Reimer manned opposite ends of the ice as the Moose and Marlies embarked on their final clash of the regular season.

At 10:34, Toronto’s Juraj Mikus was handed a holding penalty to give Manitoba their first powerplay of the afternoon. Planted in the Marlies zone, Guillaume Desbiens batted the puck from the slot and through Reimer’s legs to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

The Moose were handed two powerplays in the second period, but couldn’t capitalize on either advantage. After 40 minutes of play the Moose still held onto their one-goal lead but the Marlies owned the shot clock 19-14.

With Ben Ondrus serving time for high-sticking at 10:52 of the third period, the Moose embarked on their fourth powerplay of the game. A defensive slip up by Manitoba allowed Tim Brent to escape on a shorthanded surge.  The centre man skated down the left side of the ice and beat Schneider through his five-hole to knot the score at one.

Both teams battled to break the tie and the Marlies even pulled Reimer in hopes to score the game-winning goal. Time expired, however, and the teams headed into overtime. By giving up one point, Toronto was eliminated from the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Five minutes proved too short for either team to score a goal and the game headed into a shootout.
