MANITOBA BEATS SAN ANTONIO 4-3 AT MTS CENTRE

For the second consecutive night the Moose and Rampage needed extra time to determine a winner, but this time Manitoba came out on top – beating San Antonio 4-3 in a shootout in front of a sold out crowd at MTS Centre. 

Manitoba received the first powerplay of the night when Ryan Hollweg was penalized for roughing at 4:17. During the two minute advantage, the Moose had one solid scoring chance on goaltender Justin Pogge but couldn’t connect before play returned to even-strength.

Five-on-five hockey paid off for the home team at 10:56. With both Rampage defenders lined up on their blueline, Nikita Kashirsky stole the puck and escaped on a breakaway. Descending in on Pogge, the Russian sniper earned his third of the season when he beat the netminder through his five-hole to open the scoring.

San Antonio benefited from their first powerplay of the night when Mike Keane was put away for hooking at 11:14. With the visiting club situated in Manitoba’s zone, Chad Kolarik snapped the puck between Cory Schneider and his right goal post to get his club back on even ground.

The Moose came out flying in the second period and scored 52 seconds into the frame. Travis Ramsey blasted the puck from the point and Guillaume Desbiens tipped it in to take the lead, 2-1.

With Ryan Weston serving time for hooking, the Moose embarked on their fourth powerplay of the night. A defensive slip up by Manitoba allowed Kyle Turris to steal the puck, dance around the remaining Moose defender, and sweep the puck around Schneider to knot the game at two with a shorthanded marker.

With Mario Bliznak serving time for hooking the Rampage stole the lead when Matt Watkins placed the puck over Schneider’s blocker and into the mesh at 19:25.

Back and forth play consumed the third period with the Rampage leading the game and the shot clock 24-21. With 6:07 remaining, the Moose connected. Mike Keane’s initial shot was stopped by Pogge, but Guillaume Desbiens stuffed in the loose rebound to score his second of the night and tie the game at three.

Overtime

Five-minutes proved too short to break the tie and the Moose and Rampage headed into a shootout to decide the game winner.
