CORY SCHNEIDER STOPS ALL 27 SHOTS FOR SECOND SHUTOUT

By Christina Caligiuri

The Manitoba Moose opened their weekend doubleheader with a 1-0 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters in front of 7,388 fans at MTS Centre on Friday night. Guillaume Desbiens notched Manitoba’s only goal while Cory Schneider earned his second shutout of the season with 27 saves.

Patrick Bordeleau picked a fight with Tommy Maxwell in the opening minutes of the game. Maxwell suffered the initial punch and then finished at the bottom of the pile when Bordeleau toppled over the tough right-winger. After the brawl, both attackers were handed five-minute fighting majors.

Manitoba received the first powerplay of the night when Lake Erie was penalized with a bench minor for too many men. Despite bringing their shot count to five on the man-advantage, the Moose couldn’t beat goaltender Tyler Weiman.

Travis Gawryletz’s hooking penalty at 4:04 of the second period put the Moose on their second man-advantage of the contest.  But like their first powerplay, the antler-crew failed to connect and went zero-for-two against the Monsters.

On their ninth shot of the contest, the Moose drew first blood. With a feed from Travis Ramsey, Guillaume Desbiens picked up the puck in the slot and fired the bullet top shelf for a 1-0 lead at 7:22.

Matt Pettinger returned the powerplay favor when he was forced to sit out for hooking at 17:38, but like the Moose, the visitors couldn’t connect with an extra-attacker.

Even though the Monsters lead the Moose in shots, 26-17, they couldn’t notch a goal. The Moose earned their second shutout of the season blanking the visiting Lake Erie club, 1-0.
