MANITOBA CLOSES OUT SIX-GAME ROAD TRIP WITH 3-2 OT LOSS IN MILWAUKEE

By Christina Caligiuri

The Manitoba Moose capped off their first road trip of the season with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday night at the Bradley Center. Brian Salcido notched his first of the season, while Sergei Shirokov netted his fourth. Goaltender Daren Machesney stopped 35 of 38 attempts in his third start this season.

Seven minutes into the first period, Ben Eaves was called for hooking and the Moose benefited from the game's first powerplay. The man-advantage did not produce a goal for the visiting Manitobans but it did put the club in a 9-2 shot lead.

With less than five minutes left in the opening frame, Nathan McIver and Tristan Grant dropped their gloves for a lengthy battle to the right of Darren Machesney’s net. Both players sat out five minutes for the fight, and the Admirals added a tripping penalty a minute later to put the Moose on their second powerplay.

It took less than a minute, but the man-advantage proved beneficial when Brian Salcido fired a wrist shot from the right point to open the scoring against goaltender Mark Dekanich.

Mike Santorelli got his club back on even ground when he backhanded the puck over Machesney’s blocker at 4: 15 of the middle frame.

An interference penalty handed to Nolan Baumgartner gave the Admirals their first powerplay at 9:54. Manitoba’s penalty killers, who were flawless in last night’s victory over Chicago, continued their perfect streak denying all of Milwaukee’s opportunities.

Manitoba was back on the powerplay when Ryan Maki earned back-to-back penalties in the ladder half of the second. The Admirals killed off the first two minute minor, but the Moose capitalized on the second advantage. Poised at the point, Marty Murray fed the puck to Sergei Shirokov who slammed the bullet in the backdoor to get back on top 2-1.

Only a minute later, the Admirals responded. Mike Santorelli beat Machesney for the second time of the stanza, this time top shelf, to knot the game at two.

Back and forth play consumed the entire third period. The teams went scoreless in final 20 minutes and Milwaukee carried a 35-27 shot lead into overtime.

Overtime

Brain Salcido’s hooking penalty gave the Admirals their second powerplay of the game. With two-seconds left on the man-advantage, Ben Guite jammed the puck over the red line to confirm a 3-2 victory for the Admirals in OT.
