MANITOBA SPLITS FIRST SEASON SERIES AGAINST LAKE ERIE

By Christina Caligiuri

After dropping their first meeting this season against the Moose last night, Lake Erie got revenge in a 5-2 rematch decision on Saturday night at the Quicken Loans Arena. Matt Pettinger and Evan Oberg both netted their first of the season for the Moose, but Lake Erie’s Chris Durno and Ryan Stoa both netted doubles along with a shorthanded single by Darren Haydar.

Tyler Weiman resumed his goaltending duties for the Monsters while Daren Machesney manned the pipes for the Moose in his second start this season.

A mere 5:42 into the game, Lake Erie opened the scoring. Parked in front of Machesney’s crease, Chris Durno smacked a rebound through the goaltenders five-hole on the Monsters first shot of the night.

34 seconds later and on their second shot, the Monsters capitalized again. Left-winger Ryan Stoa found an opening in Machesney’s net to put his club in an early two-goal lead.

Mike Funk’s hooking penalty at 8:24 put the home team on the first powerplay of the game. Manitoba’s penalty killers looked sharp and didn’t allow a single shot on goal during the two-minute advantage.

In his first game this season with the Moose, Matt Pettinger put the Moose back within one. Eric Walsky’s initial shot was blocked by Weiman but the rebound went off Matt Pettinger’s skate and into the net, 2-1.

The Moose were on the penalty kill when Matt Pettinger was penalized for high-sticking at 2:08 of the second stanza. With a pass from Marty Sertich, Ryan Stoa put the Monsters back in a two-goal lead with his second of the night, 3-1.

A slip-up in Manitoba’s defensive zone allowed Chris Durno to escape on a breakaway, notch his second of the night, and put his club in a 4-1 lead at 10:43 of the middle frame.

On their third powerplay, the Moose were able to extend their man-advantage-goal streak to six consecutive games. With a shot from the blueline, Evan Oberg scored his first American Hockey League goal to cut the Monsters lead in half, 4-2.

At 10:45 of the final frame, Darren Haydar escaped on a shorthanded surge and beat Machesney low under his glove to confirm the game, 5-2.
