Moose vs. Marlies:
The Manitoba Moose and Toronto Marlies carry an even 3-3-0-0 regular season record into Friday night's game at Ricoh Coliseum. The last time they clashed, the Moose suffered a 2-0 shutout loss to the Marlies on February 20, 2010. In fact, after winning the first three games this season against the Marlies, the moose have dropped their last three against the Toronto club. Historically, Manitoba holds a 23-11-2-2 record against the Marlies, the Maple Leafs' affiliate and hold a 9-6-2-1 record when playing on visiting ice. Ontario native Marco Rosa leads his club with nine points against the Marlies (4g, 5a) after six games played while Kyle Calder leads his crew with five points after four games (3g, 2a).
Fight to the Finish:
Sitting in fourth place in the North Division with 78 points, the Moose will spend their last six games battling to clinch a playoff spot. The club is currently three points behind the third place Abbotsford Heat with one game in-hand over the B.C. club. With six games left on the docket, four against North Division rivals, the Moose need to end the season on a winning streak. So far this campaign the Moose are 19-12-1-0 against North Division opponents.
April Has Arrived:
Friday's game against the Marlies kicks off the final month of the regular season for both Manitoba and Toronto. The Moose play six games in the final month of the season, four of which are against North Division opponents. the club will play four consecutive games on the road and close-out the regular season with a doubleheader on home ice. These six games will determine if Manitoba is able to clinch a spot in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs. Last season, the Moose went 1-3-1-0 in April and 4-2 in their playoff run against the Toronto Marlies to claim the North Division Semi-Final. The fewest games the Moose have played in April was four in 2003-04, when the club failed to make the playoffs for only the second time in franchise history.
Shooting Gallery:
The Moose have been outshot in four of their last five games by a total of 37 shots (153-116). In their last game the Moose were outshot 43-20 by the Abbotsford Heat on March 30, 2010 (2-1L). So far this season the Moose are 16-8-1-0 when outshooting their opponents and 18-23-4-1 when being outshot.
Players To Watch
Working Hard For His Money:
Moose goaltender Cory Schneider has started in Manitoba's last 10 consecutive games dating back to March 5, 2010 at Grand Rapids. In that time, the third-year 'tender has accumulated an even 5-5 record. Former Moose goaltender Tyler Moss holds the record for most consecutive games played with 17 straight from December 6, 2003 to January 7, 2004. Schneider, the reigning AHL Goalie of the Year, is currently second in the league in wins with 31 (which is also a new Moose franchise record), but he is second in the league in losses with 23. He is third in the AHL in minutes played with 3247 (a new franchise mark), second in the league in saves with 1520 and is also tops in shootout wins with five. If Schneider plays four of the last six games this regular season, he will beat the club's games-played record which sits at 58 by Fred Brathwaite (1996-97).
Follow the Leader:
Marco Rosa scored his team-leading 22nd goal of the season in Manitoba's 2-1 loss to Abbotsford on Tuesday night.
