Match Up
Moose vs. Penguins:
Tonight, the Manitoba Moose are facing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a rematch after Thursday night's 1-0 overtime victory for the Penguins. Before last night, the last time the Moose faced the Penguins was back in 2006-07 when the Baby-Pens beat the Moose 0-2-1-1. Historically, the Moose hold a 4-4-3-2 record against the Penguins (2-1-2-2 on home ice). After tonight the Moose will visit the Pittsburgh Penguins' affiliate to close out their regular season series on January 30 & 31, 2010.
No Score in 60 Minutes:
For the fourth time in franchise history the Manitoba Moose last night carried a 0--0 score into overtime (January 17, 2001 at Grand Rapids, 0-1SOL; March 10, 2004 vs. Cleveland, 0-0T; October 23, 2009 at Chicago, 1-0 SOW; October 29, 2009 vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, 0-1OTL). This is the first time in franchise history the Moose have experienced two goalless extra-time games in a single season -- and only two games apart.
Overtime Woes:
Manitoba dropped their second overtime decision on Thursday night by a 1-0 score to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. This is the first time the Moose have lost an overtime game at home in two full years (October 13, 2007 vs. Grand Rapids, 3-4OTL). Last season, the Moose only dropped one overtime decision in the regular season and four in their Calder Cup playoff run. All-time the Moose are 30-33 in the extra five-minute frame. The most overtime losses the club has endured in a single season is seven which has occurred twice (2005-06 & 2006-07).
Plugging In Extra Hours:
For the third game in a row, the Moose have required extra-time to determine a winner. The Moose earned a 1-0 shootout victory over Chicago, followed by a 3-2 overtime loss to Milwaukee, and then a 1-0 overtime loss to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last night. So far this season the Moose are 1-2 in overtime decisions and 2-0 in shootout.
Players To Watch
Rapid Fire Rosa:
In last night's shutout loss to the Penguins, Marco Rosa fired nine shots on goaltender John Curry. He currently leads the club in shots with 42 so far this season -- the next in line are Sergei Shirokov, Marty Murray and Michael Grabner, all tied with 24. Rosa was one shot shy of tying the franchise record for most shots in a single game which has occurred eight times -- most recently by Lee Goren on March 23, 2007 vs. Grand Rapids.
Strong on the Backend:
Starting goaltender Daren Machesney set aside 21 of 22 shots in last night's overtime loss, good enough for third star honours. The Hamilton, ON native has appeared in four games with the Moose this season and accumulated a 1-3-0 record, 2.46 GAA, and 9.912 save percentage.
Missing a Few Key Players:
Last night, the Moose were without eight players who normally occupy a spot on their roster. Michael Grabner, Alexandre Bolduc, Sergei Shirokov and Cory Schneider are all with the parent Vancouver Canucks, Lawrence Nycholat and Matt Pope are both on the injured list, Nathan McIver sat out with a one-game suspension and Eric Walsky is currently ill. Still the team managed to earn a single point with a 1-0 overtime loss in which they outshot Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 23-22.
Streaks & Milestones:
- Michael Grabner is one point away from his 100th in Moose colours.
- Nolan Baumgartner is five games away from his 300th as a Moose.
- Marty Murray is one point away from his 350th in the AHL.
- Marco Rosa is four points away from his 100th in the AHL>
