Bluesman James headlines Yearling Foundation Gala

By Gary Lawless

ON the ice, the Manitoba Moose are fighting to hang onto second place in the AHL's North Division. Off it, they're chasing the $2-million mark in charitable donations.

The club will host its annual Yearling Foundation Gala on Thursday at MTS Centre and announce the recipients of this year's grants. The Yearling Foundation is the official charity of the Moose and donates money to a number of registered children's charities in Manitoba. Since its inception in 1996 the foundation has dispersed over $1.8 million.

"Reaching the $2-million mark, we're really excited and aiming for that," said foundation director Kelly McArthur. "That's our ultimate goal this year and a great milestone for us. We're extremely committed to giving to the community and that number represents an impactful amount."

The foundation received grant applications from 55 charities this year and the board has selected 18 recipients.

"The board looks at the programs and initiatives of the applicants and selects the ones that best fit our foundation," said McArthur. "The gala dinner is one of our biggest revenue generators and is key to our success. This year our event falls on Valentine's Day and our theme is passion. Passion for the hockey team and passion for giving back to the community."

Opportunity

McArthur says the event is a wonderful opportunity for people to get close to the team while doing good for the community.

"We're showcasing the hockey club, the foundation and the great entertainment that people can see at MTS Centre," said McArthur.

Six-time Juno winner Colin James will headline the event with CFL Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Irving handling MC duties. Moose coach Scott Arniel and the hockey team will be at the event and those in attendance will have the opportunity to take part in the Foundation's silent auction showcasing autographed items from the AHL, NHL and recording artists that have performed at MTS Centre.

Tickets are still available. For more information call 926-5517.
