Moose Notes

Moose powerplay starts firing: The Manitoba Moose tied a franchise record with four powerplay goals in a game in Saturday’s 5-4 shootout defeat to the Grand Rapids Griffins. It was the eighth time in Moose franchise history the Moose have scored four powerplay goals in a single game. The most recent was against San Antonio on November 5/05 in a 5-1 victory. The Moose had 13 power play opportunities going 4-for-13, while the Griffins had 11 power plays of their own, capitalizing on one of their chances.

Shootout record: The Manitoba Moose were involved in their second shootout of the season on Saturday versus the Griffins - a 5-4 loss at the Van Andel Arena. The Moose are now 0-2 in shootouts after losing their first shootout of the season to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3-2 at the MTS Centre. Drew MacIntyre was the goaltender in both, having allowed four goals on nine attempts. Jesse Schultz and Brandon Reid are the only Moose players to score in a shootout this season. Last season the Moose were involved in nine shootouts finishing with a record of 4-5.

Edler gets the call: With the Vancouver Canucks suffering several injuries on the blue-line, Alex Edler got the call up to the big club to help fill the void on defence. In ten games played for the Moose this season, Edler had totalled no goals and two assists for two points, adding six penalty minutes and a +/- rating of -2. Edler logged a solid 13 minutes in his NHL debut and finished even with one shot on goal in a 3-2 loss to the Avalanche at the Pepsi Center in Colorado.

Week in Review

Moose vs Grand Rapids 11/04/06

TOUGH START TO FOUR-GAME SERIES WITH GRIFFINS

The Manitoba Moose earned one of a possible four points this past week, as they played the first two of a four-game "home-and-home" series with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Moose, facing the Griffins for the first time since losing Game 7 of the 2006 North Division Final, were looking to exact some revenge at Van Andel Arena on Friday. The game did not go as planned for Manitoba as Jimmy Howard earned his first shutout this season for the Griffins and the third of his career in a 4-0 defeat of the Moose. The shutout was the third time the Moose were held scoreless on the year, suffering earlier shutout losses this season to Philadelphia and Milwaukee.

Game two of the series on Saturday night proved to be a much better effort for the Moose as they tied a franchise record with four power play goals in a single game. Brad Moran, Nathan Smith, Joe Rullier, and Jason Jaffray all scored power play markers for the Moose. It was the eighth time in Moose franchise history that they scored four powerplay goals in a single game, the most recent coming against San Antonio on November 5th, 2005 in a 5-1 victory. The Moose finished the game 4-for-13 on the powerplay. Unfortunately for the Moose they were unable to hold off the hometown Griffins, as they battled back from a goal on three separate occassions to send the game into overtime. The extra frame decided nothing, even though both teams enjoyed some 4-on-3 power play time, leaving a shootout to decide the victor. Josh Langfeld and Kip Miller , who both scored in regulation, also scored in the shootout for the Griffins while Jesse Schultz was the only Moose player to score in the shootout for the Moose. The Griffins stole the extra point in the standings, leaving the Moose 0-1-0-1 for the week.

The Moose and Griffins will close-out their four-game series on Tuesday, November 7th and Wednesday, November 8th at the MTS Centre. Manitoba will then play host to the reigning Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears on Friday and Saturday. This will mark the first time in franchise history that the Moose will play Hershey, leaving the Norfolk Admirals as the only team that the Moose have yet to play in the AHL.

Upcoming Opponents

Grand-Rapids GriffinsThe Moose will finish their four-game series against the Grand Rapids Griffins at the MTS Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday. Manitoba will be looking to turn the tables on the Griffins who came away with victories in both games at Van Andel Arena. Hershey BearsThe Moose will play host to the reigning Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears on Friday, November 10th and Saturday, November 11th at the MTS Centre. This will mark the first time in franchise history that the Manitoba Moose and Hershey Bears will play each other. The Bears currently sit third in the East Division standings with a 8-1-0-1 record in ten games played this season for a total of 17 points.
