@ germanhockeyfan

You're right - some hockeyteams had these nicknames before the DEL was founded. Even in soccer some teams have nicknames also with animals: Geisboecke (billy goats) - I think it's Cologne or the Fohlen Elf (foal eleven) is Gladbach.

You're not completely right with the Frankfurt Lions. They where the Loewen (lions) before the DEL. But the DEL wanted english names and so they became the lions and the chocolate bar was a sponsor for one or two years.

Most hockey fans get along with the names well, you're right. But people outside hockey always moan about them. And one name really is terrible: Hamburg Freezers!! Rolling Eyes

Maybe you guys in Iserlohn should re-name your team Laughing Wink Game-cocks is cool Very Happy

We all know where this is going. All team names are abbreviated and we all know what such a team would be called. So I say:

Now there's a team that would be popular in San Francisco.

I can just picture MM and BF wearing t-shirts that say "BIG ***** FAN" or "I LOVE *****".

What would the logo on the 3rd jersey look like?

If a player was brought up from the minors would te media say "Smith has brought up to the *****"?

Would that player then say "I have always wanted to be one of the ****"?

During a losing streak would it be said "The ***** are having a hard time"?

Or that "the ***** have gone soft"?

Would the final home game of the season be called "***** appreciation night"?

That's great!! Laughing *lol*

I know the other meaning of the word in English - that would surely be a real problem Embarassed Shocked Wink . In German we'd have no problem. A male chicken just is a male chicken - nothing else. The roosters always stand a good chance to be called grilled chicken at road games. I guess the players actually hate that. And who likes to hear this before a game: Tonight we pull the freezers plug. Laughing

But you're right, they'd better stick to Roosters in Iserlohn Cool

Hi again!

Smile

The Boys are back in town, the pre-season is over, the DEL-season 08/09 started friday.

Iserlohn Roosters opened at home with a safe 5-2-win over Hannover scorpions.

Last year's 'Moose'-line with Jimmy, Ryan and Pat was terminated after last season because Pat Kavanagh changed over to domestic rival Frankfurt Lions. And new Iserlohn head coach Steve Stirling seperated the 'unidentical twins' Jimmy Roy and Ryan Ready. He took Ryan into the first line with last year's outstanding center Robert Hock and league's best striker Michael Wolf.

Jimmy Roy striked a nice goal and scored 1+1.
Ryan Ready played a satisfying match and scored 0+1.

Pat Kavanagh won his first match with his new club against Nuremberg Ice Tigers 4:2, but he didn't score.

OK, next game, next reply... Wink

Sunday, Sept. 7th

Mannheim Eagles vs. Iserlohn Roosters 3:0 (1:0/1:0/1:0)

Big-budget-club Mannheim with former Moose Fred Brathwaite, Sven Butensch?n and Jason King didn't commit the fault again to underestimate the Roosters... this time they played with high energy and discipline and the game took the expected process between a champions-prospect and a play-off-candidate... Wink

Next game for the Roosters will be Thursday night at home against Cologne sharks.

Frankfurt Lions won at Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg 5:4 OT. Pat Kavanagh assisted twice...

Roosters won the classic duel against Sharks after a thrilling game:

Iserlohn Roosters vs. Cologne Sharks 6:4 (1:2/3:0/2:2)

First Period saw better Sharks, so the lead was well-earned. Roosters' head coach Steve Stirling obviously found the right words to bring the Roosters back into the game: the second period totally belonged to the hometeam. 8 minutes before the end Brad Tapper increased the lead 5:2 and no one would bet on the Sharks... but a lucy short-handed goal and some moments later a 5-3-powerplay situation after some very strange penalties against Iserlohn. Cologne striked to 4:5 and the match changed into a game of nerves... but 7 second before finish Ryan Ready cleared the situation with an empty-net-goal...

Jimmy Roy didn't score.
Ryan Ready scored 1+2.
Tyler Beechey scored 1+2.

> Here < you can find a very nice picture gallery of the first season match against Hannover Scorpions and if you like to see how Jimmy Roy is looking now click > here < or > here <... Wink

Frankfurt Lions with Pat Kavanagh lost against Berlin Polar Bears 1:3. Kavy striked the only Lions-goal.

Former Moose Brandon Reid had a good start into the season with Dusseldorf Metro-Stars. He scored 2+3 in 4 games and is 2nd best in the league's stats.

Roosters continued in losing on the road and winning at home:

Straubing Tigers vs. Iserlohn Roosters 4:2 (1:0/2:0/1:2)

Jimmy and Ryan without scores.
Tyler Beechey with 1+1

Iserlohn Roosters vs. Nuremberg Ice Tigers 4:3 (1:2/1:1/2:0)

Jimmy didn't score.
Tyler Beechey with 0+1.
Ryan Ready with 1+0.

Iserlohn was 1:3 behind but again showed comeback-qualities and turned the match. Ryan Ready striked the gamewinning-goal with a very nice onetimer!

Next game will be Sunday night at Ingolstadt Panthers. That's not far away from Munich and the Roosters will stay the night in the South of Germany and visit the world-renowned Oktoberfest in Munich on Monday... hopefully this will be motivation for catching the first on-the-road-points this season... Wink

Last Sunday Dusseldorf Metro-Stars met the Frankfurt Lions and lost the game 2:3. Brandon Reid scored 0+2, Pat Kavanagh 0+1.

The "Oktoberfest-Bait" worked!

Ingolstadt Panthers vs. Iserlohn Roosters 3:5
(2:2/0:0/1:3)

Jimmy Roy with 0+1.
Ryan Ready with 1+0.
Tyler Beechey with 1+0.

Iserlohn Roosters lifted the 'Ingolstadt'-curse: After 10 losses in a row at Ingolstadt and 5,5 years without a win now the team achieved a well-earned win. The only blur was an injury of former Moose Tyler Beechey. Caused of some slashing when he striked the first goal of the match, a finger might have been broken. The diagnosis is unclear at moment. Nevertheless the team on monday visited the 'Oktoberfest' at Munich and enjoyed the famous Bavarian Beer and roasted chicken... Wink

2nd away-victory for the Roosters:

Hannover Scorpions vs. Iserlohn Roosters 3:4 SO (1:1/1:1/1:1/0:0/0:1)

Man of the match: Ryan Ready! He is becoming more and more important for the Roosters. RR scored two goals including the 1:1-tie in the first period and the game-winning-penalty-shot in the Shootout!

Jimmy didn't score this time.
Tyler Beechey had to skip the game because of his finger-injury.

If you like you can watch scenes of the match by > clicking here <.

The Roosters had a good start into the new season. After 7 matches played, Iserlohn stands on 5th place in the table.

Next game will be Sunday night at home against DEL-promoted team Kassel Huskies.

Next game, next Ready-goal, next victory:

Iserlohn Roosters vs. Kassel Huskies 4:3 (2:0/2:1/0:2)

Ryan Ready scored 1+0.
Jimmy Roy didn't score.

With the 4th win in a row Iserlohn climbed 3rd stair in the table and proceeded after last season with a sparkling offensive (and successful!) hockey-style!

Next game will be Friday night at home against rival Dusseldorf Metro Stars with Brandon Reid (he has 4+7 in 8 matches; this is best in his team and : 6th best in the league).

Afterwards i will go to Stockholm/Sweden to join the NHL coming to Europe and to follow the 2nd season opener Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa!

Yesterday the Roosters hosted League's probably weakest Team Duisburg Foxes and reached a hard-earned win:

Iserlohn Roosters vs. EV Duisburg 6:4 (3:0/1:3/2:1)

Jimmy Roy scored 2+0.
Ryan Ready scored 1+2.

After 12 of in total 52 regular season games played Iserlohn are at excellent 3rd position in the table. But the distance to 10th place is only 4 points at moment.

Ryan is in excellent shape so far. He scored 8+8, this is 2nd best in the team and 7th best in the league. Jimmy scored 3+4, this is 9th best in the team.

To have a look at other former Moose players:

Brandon Reid (Deg Metro Stars) has 4+10 in 13 matches, it's 2nd best in his team and 11th best in the league.
Pat Kavanagh (Frankfurt Lions) wasn't able to continue his superier stats from last season. He has 2+6 at moment, that's 73th in the league.
Jason King (Mannheim Eagles) has big problems to find his way in a new league: He has 2+2 in 12 games. Yesterday he took a major penalty with a game misconduct penalty for high sticking.
____

I wrote a reply including some words about my journey to Stockholm (NHL premiere) some days ago, but unfortunately it might got lost?!

So i repeat a few words: Stockholm is a very nice town with a medieval urban core ('Gamla Stan'). Unfortunately the Sunday was totally rain-swept and very stormy, so all my plans for a sightseeing-day felt through... we watched the 2nd match between Penguins and Senators on Sunday (Sens won 3:1).

The ball-shaped Globen (spectators: 13.699) is an impressing hockey rink: very stylish, the walls and seats inside are of crimson color.

The game itself wasn't the best one, to be honest. We watched the first meeting one day before in a sports bar (Pens won 4:3OT) and it was better i think. But nevertheless it was something very special for some European hockey fans to watch some exceptionel stars of this sport like Crosby, Malkin, Satan, Fleury, Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson and so on.

Also Mario Lemieux was in the audience and waved his hand when he was captured on the video cube... Wink

So now i can tell my grandchildren that i saw three of the best canadian hockey players ever (Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby) in nature... Wink

I guess not. We had seats under the umbrella of the Globen Wink I guess nearly 40 to 50 meters above the ice... and therefore beyond the TV-camera's range i think...

Uh, time flied since my last posting...

In the meantime Roosters played six matches, won the first three in a row and lost the last three in a row...

Last game was thursday at Dusseldorf:

Nov, 13th DEG Metro Stars - Iserlohn Roosters 5:2 (0:0/3:0/2:2)

Jimmy scored a goal.
Ryan didn't score.

Brandon Reid
striked two nice goals for Dusseldorf and was player of the game.

Jimmy Roy shot a nice goal astonishing excellent DEG goalie Jamie Storr from behind the goal. Later in the match he was badly hit by an open-ice-check from Ryan Ramsey. Jimmy dashed backwards on the ice and had to suffer a cut on his forehead. He taggered into the cabin where he was stiched. Ramsey jumped before he hit Jimmy so the check wasn't regular, but the ref didn't call any punishment... so the Roosters' canadian guys took charge of revenge for Jimmy and raised the most extended brawl on the ice so far this season...

You can watch a clip of the game >>> here <<<

Ryan Ready was hurt by a puck that impinged on his foot. His and Jimmy's appearances in today's match at Duisburg are very doubtful. Because of two suspended players after that rumble action and two to four injured players who have to miss the match, the chances to get points in the next game are minimised...

That's a good video link with highlights from many games. The first game on the list showed a goal by Eric Chouinard.

Time flies...

Hopefully next days i will find some time to keep you updated about Jimmy, Ryan and the others...

But today the next Ex-Moose signed a contract with Iserlohn Roosters:
Last year's Moose Greg Classen changes over to Europe again (he already played one season for Hamburg Freezers some years ago).

What can you say about his skills? How about his faceoff-qualities? (that's what we need most of all... Wink )

Yeah, I saw that transaction on Eurohockey.net. Classen had signed with the Amerks (who offered him a SPC) but he didn't get to play or sign because of visa issues.

Keep us updated on how he plays Very Happy

After a 24h-marathon-trip Classen arrived in Iserlohn and will play tonight at home against his Ex-club Hamburg Freezers.

The current situation of his new team isn't the best: Iserlohn lost 10 of last 13 matches. After 30 gamedays (of 52 in regular season) the Roosters are placed 10th in the league. This is the last that leads into the playoff-qualifying round...

On Friday Iserlohn lost at Nuremberg:

Sinupret Ice-Tigers Nuremberg vs. Iserlohn Roosters 5:1

JimmyRoy and Ryan Ready had bad luck: Jimmy had to suffer a deep cut in his forearm after a collision with an opponent's runner... Ryan was given a major penalty including game misconduct. At moment Jimmy's appearance in tonight's match is unclear. Ryan ist suspended.

The Roosters have played 28 matches this season so far.

Jimmy Roy appeared in 25 matches and scored 10+5. This is 104th in the league and 8th best in his team. He was given 42 penalty minutes.

Ryan Ready also appeared in 25 matches. He scored 29 points (12+17), this is 19th in the DEL and 3rd best in his team (consider: 1st and 2nd best scoring players in the league are teammates...). The major penalty last game increased his penalty-account to 61 minutes. This is place 22 in the league.

Short-term Ex-Moose Tyler Beechey (who mostly plays in the outstanding first Roosters-line) only appeared in 18 matches because of injuries, but he scored 19 times (5+14).

After this season the contracts of all 3 named players end. May be one of them will extend his contract with the Roosters these days because it's tradition in Iserlohn that a contract-extension is announced as a christmas-gift to the crowd... i hope that all three will stay in Iserlohn but the most important signing could be the one of Ryan Ready. He's not a league-outstanding player but he's playing very solid, fighting all the time, living for hockey (these attributes describe Jimmy as well!) and has a scoring touch (that's what Jimmy misses a little bit). So in my opinion most of the DEL-clubs could be interested in Ryan and therefore it could be the hardest thing to hold him in Iserlohn...
___

A short look to some of the other former Moose guys now playing in the DEL:

Pat Kavanagh has a 1-point-average per game: He played 29 matches and scored 12+17 (same as Ryan Ready but he needed 4 more games). It's 19th in the league and 2nd in his team Frankfurt Lions. They are placed 3rd at moment and probably will qualify directly to the Playoffs.

Brandon Reid appeared in all 31 matches of his DEG Metro Stars and is scoring leader in his team: he striked 12 goals and assisted another 18. This is 13th best in the league. Dusseldorf Metro Stars are placed 8th, with 5 points in the lead compared to Iserlohn but 3 matches more played.

Jason King (Mannheim Eagles) finally seems to arrive in the league after big problems at the beginning. He played 27 matches and scored 5+10 (same as Jimmy Roy in 2 games less...). Mannheim currently is placed 4th in the league.

Ironic that Jason King's scoring stats are the rough equivalent of Jimmy Roy's. And that's especially unsettling because King usually starts fast and then fades. (Remember him being NHL rookie of the month one October?)

You won't be surprised that Jimmy played in spite of having a stitched cut in his arm... and he played excellent and shot two goals on sunday:

Sunday, Dec. 21st

Iserlohn Roosters vs. Hamburg Freezers 4:5OT
(3:0/1:1/0:3/0:1)

Jimmy Roy scored 2 goals.
Greg Classen assisted 1 goal.

Tuesday, Dec. 23rd

Kassel Huskies vs. Iserlohn Roosters 5:4SO
(1:1/2:3/1:0/0:0/1:0)

Jimmy Roy with 2 assists.
Ryan Ready with 1 goal, 1 assist.
Greg Classen wihtout points.

Both matches were very frustrating for the Roosters and seemed to have the same screenplay: Iserlohn played excellent first and second period, earned a 4:1-lead and was on the street of a win. But mistakes in defence gave the opponents the chance to come back into the match. 4:2, 4:3 and Roosters lost all self confidence and went to pieces... Crying or Very sad

Greg Classen had a convincing debut on Sunday. Although i heard contrary statements before i think he is a good skater. From the start he had a good linking to the system, worked good backwards and showed acceptable faceoff-skills Wink After 3 months without match practice a good start and if he continues like this he should be a gain to the team.

Next match will be tomorrow (Friday, 26th) at home against domestic rival Cologne Sharks.
___

I wish you a merry christmas and all the best for the forthcoming year!!!

Very Happy
