The Manitoba Moose rolled into Portage la Prairie Sunday afternoon to play their final intrasquad game of training camp. Team Black was victorious and was awarded the Rotary Cup by virtue of their 5-2 win. Jason King and Jason Lehoux led the way for Team Black with two goals apiece.
Team Black got on the board first after a penalty was assessed to Bryson Busniuk for high-sticking. 20 seconds after that, Jason Lehoux beat McVicar shortside on a blast after accepting a feed from Tomas Mojzis.
Team White had an opportunity to get back in it several minutes later after Nick Naumenko was ticketed for cross-checking. However, Minard made a number of key stops to keep it a 1-0 game.
White continued to pour on the pressure but Minard remained solid in goal for Team Black. Jesse Schultz had a great chance from the slot but the veteran netminder made a great glove grab.
Minard came up huge again after a Justin Morrison centering pass to Peter Sarno left the speedy centreman alone in the slot. However, his shot was stopped by Minard. A couple of minutes later, Minard made another huge glove stop off Burrows in close.
Early in the second period, Black struck again as Jason King scored his third of training camp, assisted by Jeff Heerema and Kent Huskins. Black came out flying in the middle frame, with nine shots before the eight minute mark of the period.
McVicar was solid in making several big stops. In particular, he stoned Nathan Smith on a two-on-one with Wade Brookbank. Smith walked in and tried to deke McVicar in close but he made the save. He also stopped a Tim Smith deflection in the slot during a Black powerplay.
Things boiled over midway through the period as Chanse Fitzpatrick and Marc-Andre Roy dropped the gloves. Roy got the advantage early, but Fitzpatrick landed some late blows.
Several minutes later, with Auld and Flaherty now between the pipes for White and Black respectively, White finally got on the board. Alex Burrows scooped a Justin Morrison rebound past Flaherty.
White looked to even it up three minutes later but the goal was waived off on a goaltender interference call after Kyle Bruce bowled over Flaherty.
With time winding down in the middle frame, Lehoux potted his second of the game and first on goaltender Alex Auld to make it 3-1 for Team Black.
King struck early in the third period with his second goal of the afternoon. He fired a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that beat Auld glove side.
Just over three minutes later, Burrows contributed his second of the game. The assist went to Josh Green, who directed the puck at the net before Burrows got a stick on it to tip it past Flaherty.
With six minutes to play in the game and White pressing to get back in, Flaherty came up big with a couple of timely saves. He stoned Goren in close and then turned away Nolan in successive chances.
Several minutes later, Black came back and iced the outcome on a goal by Brad Ralph. A minute later, Ralph topped off his goal with a fight as he and Kyle Bruce dropped the gloves.
White made one final gasp at the end of the game, but Flaherty stood tall in making a series of saves.
