2004 Manitoba Moose Training Camp: Day Four

by Marc Ciampa

Head coach Randy Carlyle and assistant coach Eric Crawford both look on during the morning skate.

Day four of camp brought the most spirited intrasquad game yet as the team wrapped up the first phase of training camp with two-a-day workouts and a scrimmage in the afternoon.

For the third straight day, White prevailed in the intrasquad game although this time it took a shootout to claim a 5-4 victory.

There was some roster shuffling between the teams. All six defenceman on both intrasquad sides swapped teams, while minor tweaking was done to the forward ranks. Jason King and Jeff Heerema were centred by Tim Smith. Jimmy Roy moved over to a line with Nathan Smith and Wade Brookbank. Top camp scorer Jesse Schultz was placed on a line with Peter Sarno and Justin Morrison on the White squad.

The change in linemates did Jason King some good right off the bat. 14:06 into the first half, he opened the scoring with a goal, assisted by Heerema and Smith. Josh Green netted his second of camp 2:45 later, with the assists going to Schultz and Morrison.

Just over two minutes later, King struck again. He rifled a shot past Flaherty to make it 2-1 for the Black squad. However, it only took Justin Morrison 55 seconds to even up the game once again. After the first half, the score was 2-2. Flaherty had a good showing for the White squad, stopping 14 of 16 shots while Auld turned aside 13 of 15 for the Blacks.

In the second half, Nathan Lutz had an unassisted marker to open the period and give White its first lead of the day. Nathan Smith scored at the 9:54 mark of the period to tie the game up once again.

Two of the hottest hands in camp, Justin Morrison and Jesse Schultz, teamed up to put White ahead by a goal once again. Schultz fed Morrison for his second of the day and fourth in camp overall.

Jimmy Roy managed to tie the game up at 4-4 and send it into a shootout.

The first player to go in the shootout was Jeff Heerema for Team Black, but his shot was stopped by Minard. Josh Green then scored on his shootout attempt, firing the puck by McVicar. No other shooters were able to dent the twine as Green's shootout marker resulted in victory for Team White.
