2004 Manitoba Moose Training Camp: Day Three

by Marc Ciampa

Ryan Kesler rubs out Kyle Bruce behind the net. Bruce scored on the ensuing penalty shot.

The second full day of training camp brought a much more spirited intrasquad game and an overall improved workout session. With a swap of goaltenders, it was Team White that came out on top once again, winning 9-2. Jimmy Roy let the way with a hat trick and an assist.

The game began much the same way as Thursday, with both teams feeling each other out for the first ten minutes or so. The best chance early on was Ryan Campbell on a one-timer that forced McVicar to make a great kick save.

Josh Green broke the ice with his first goal of camp 11:35 into the first half. Stealing the puck from Derek Eastman, Green broke in on Minard and rifled the puck past him.

The Black team responded less than three minutes later when a Nathan Smith shot was stopped by McVicar, but the rebound was potted in by Justin Morrison.

Nathan Lutz had the first penalty shot of the afternoon for Team Black after being held by Burrows in his own zone. However, he was unable to capitalize. Just over a minute later, White struck with their second goal on a Joe DiPenta blast from the top of the circle.

In the dying minutes of the half, Jimmy Roy made it 3-1 White backhanding in a Marc-Andre Roy rebound. After the first half, the score was 3-1 in favour of Team White. Mike Minard stopped 15 of 18 shots for Team Black while Robert McVicar turned aside 10 of 11 for White.

In the second half, scoring came early and often for Jimmy Roy. At 3:58 he backhanded a Schultz shot past a sprawled Wade Flaherty and exactly a minute later, Roy took a feed from Schultz on a two-on-none and put it in the back of the net. The line struck again less than two minute later, this time on a goal by Jesse Schultz assisted by Roy.

With Team White now ahead 6-1, frustration started to set in. Ryan Kesler roughed up Kyle Bruce behind Black's net, setting up a penalty shot. Bruce made no mistake, firing the puck top right corner past Flaherty to make it 7-1.

Team Black finally received some redemption after Justin Morrison scored his second of the game at the 19:05 mark of the second half. His goal came on a penalty shot after a Lee Goren high-sticking infraction.

One of the highlights of the scrimmage was a beautiful open-ice hit by Naumenko on Kirill Koltsov. The veteran defenceman caught Koltsov with his head down and sent him tumbling to the ice.

Brandon Nolan made it 8-2 after blasting home a Nick Naumenko feed, and Alexandre Burrows added the ninth goal with 1:14 to play in the game.

Alex Auld was very strong in the second half, stopping 18 of 19 shots, while Flaherty turned aside six.
