The players congregate around head coach Randy Carlyle following Thursday's scrimmage
On Thursday, the Manitoba Moose completed the first full day of training camp. With the team split into two separate squads, each had a morning practice followed by an afternoon intrasquad game between the two teams.
In the intrasquad game, Team B (wearing white jerseys) defeated Team A (wearing black jerseys) by a score of 5-1. The intrasquad game consisted of two 25-minute halves with stop time.
The first half had Alex Auld in goal for the black squad and Wade Flaherty tending net for the whites. With the two netminders ticketed for Manitoba at the start of this season, it was no surprise that the opening 25 minutes came down to a goaltender's duel. Auld made eight stops in the frame to Flaherty's five.
The intrasquad game was a good chance for Moose players to familiarize themselves with the new AHL rules and line markings. However, in the case of infractions penalty shots were called with the opposing team members lined up on the blueline chasing down the player taking the shot.
Auld stopped both penalty shots he faced. Following a Justin Morrison slash, Tomas Mojzis' penalty shot attempt was saved. Less than a minute later, Tim Smith was hauled down on a breakaway by Nolan Baumgartner but also couldn't score. After the first half, the score was 0-0.
It didn't take long for the floodgates to open in the second half. Brandon Nolan scored in the opening minute and two minutes later, the black team tied it on a Chanse Fitzpatrick one-timer past an outstretched Minard low on the short side.
Josh Green was clipped with a high stick, setting up a penalty shot for the white team. However, with Green incapacitated Lee Goren took the shot and was thwarted. Goren made up for his miss four minutes later roofing a backhander past McVicar on the penalty shot to make it 2-1.
Less than a minute later, Tim Smith popped in a rebound to give the whites a two-goal lead. Nick Naumenko made it 4-1 on a blast from the point that rocketed into the top corner of the net.
Brandon Nolan netted his second of the game on a two-on-none with Jesse Schultz. The two played a give-and-go before Nolan eventually potted the puck into the open net.
Following the scrimmage, Moose players participated in several wind sprints before retiring to the locker room.
