MacIntyre gets OT game-winning goal

With a penalty pending for Manitoba, Chicago opted for an extra attacker and pulled their goaltender in overtime Wednesday night. But an errant pass made its way from a Wolves stick into the empty net, securing a 2-1 OT win for the Moose. As the last Moose player to touch the puck, goaltender Drew MacIntyre was credited with the game-winning goal as well as the win.

First Period

Playing in his first game since Nov. 1/07 and first AHL game since becoming an NHL regular last season, gritty defender Kevin Bieksa started his conditioning stint by taking an early hooking penalty at 1:34. Though the Moose killed his penalty, the Wolves used the man-advantage to pepper goaltender Drew MacIntyre with the puck and take an initial 6-1 shot lead.

As Manitoba narrowed the shot-gap by testing Ondrej Pavelec, forwards Mike Brown and Joey Crabb took a break from the offensive pursuit to drop the gloves near the penalty boxes. Brown netted an extra two minutes for roughing, and Chicago benefited from their second powerplay in the game's first 10 minutes.

Manitoba's penalty-kill preceded the visitors' first powerplays. Jason Krog took a high-sticking penalty at 15:24, and though the Moose couldn't beat Pavelec on that man-advantage, a trio of penalties put Manitoba back up five-on-four to close out the period.

After 20 minutes, the Moose led the shot-count 10-9 and carried a man-advantage into the middle frame.

Second Period

Chicago held back Manitoba's powerplay in the early minutes of the second and even-strength play resumed. 2:30 into five-on-five, Moose rookie Pierre-Cedric Labrie surged up the left side and fooled Pavelec from the top of the face-off circle to scored his fifth of the season, first since Nov. 2/07, and first Moose goal against the Wolves this season.

Near the midway point of the game, the Wolves drew a tripping penalty from Jason Jaffray and sought a powerplay equalizer. But as Chicago edged the 20-shot mark, MacIntyre made a handful of great saves to keep his club up by one.

Another cluster of penalties near the 14-minute mark resulted in more man-advantages, but powerplay goals continued to elude both clubs and the score remained stuck at 1-0.

With 91-seconds left on the clock, Chicago managed to change things up. Poised on MacIntyre's right side, Bryan Little fired home a quick snapshot to tie the game at one heading into the third period.

Third Period

A second consecutive Wolves powerplay kept the Moose on the defensive through the early part of the third. The home team increased their shot-count to 24 on the final man-advantages but, thanks to strong penalty killing and goaltending, were unable to rediscover the back of the Moose net.

As Chicago toed the 30-shot mark and Manitoba hit 20 attempts, both clubs rallied to close out regulation and headed to overtime tied at one.

Overtime

Four minute into four-on-four sudden death, the Wolves drew a penalty and pulled Pavelec. With the penalty pending and Chicago controlling the play, the puck sailed off a Wolves stick and made its way through the neutral zone and straight into the home net. As the last Moose player to touch the puck, goaltender Drew MacIntyre was credited with the game-winning goal as well as a 2-1 overtime victory for his club.

MacIntyre becomes only the second Moose goaltender in franchise history and ninth goaltender in the 72-year AHL history to be credited with a goal. Fred Brathwaite was the first Moose goalie to score, a feat he accomplished Nov. 9/96 at Long Beach.
