First Period
Making his fourth consecutive start for the Moose, Drew MacIntyre manned the home pipes opposite 27-year-old Aeros netminder Nolan Schaefer. Three minutes into the opening period, Schaefer would be the first to crack, as Michael Grabner tipped Mike Keane's shot from the point under the goalie's pads to give Manitoba an early one-goal lead.
26 seconds later, Houston received the opportunity to even the score on the man-advantage, but Manitoba stifled that first powerplay and protected their early lead. Though a second powerplay near the period's halfway point also failed to result in an Aeros goal, the visitors tested MacIntyre on the man-advantages, firing 14 shots to Manitoba's five after 20 minutes of play.
Second Period
Three consecutive penalties to Houston in the second period gave Manitoba a trio of powerplay opportunities to extend their lead, but several quick saves by Schaefer and aggressive penalty killing from the rest of the Aeros stalled the score at 1-0.
Seconds after the return of five-on-five play, the Aeros set up in the Moose zone, got MacIntyre down on the ice and out of position, the took full advantage of a cluttered crease. At 12:04, winger Danny Irmen fired lifted the puck into the home net to tie the game at one.
A third Moose penalty to Rick Rypien made both the Aeros and Moose 0-for-3 on the powerplay and tied 1-1 heading into the third.
Third Period
As the Moose closed in on the Aeros in shots, both clubs battled hard for the go-ahead goal. Three more powerplays provided the best scoring opportunities, but -- as through the first two periods -- penalty killers (and goal-posts) were impenetrable in the final frame.
At the end of regulation, Manitoba had posted 26 shots to Houston's 27 and both clubs headed into overtime.
Overtime
The Moose assumed a brief shot-lead two minutes into the extra period, but by the end of four-on-four play, the score-clock was perfectly matched, showing one goal and 29 shots for both teams.
Shootout
Manitoba's Colby Genoway opened up the shootout with a patient drop-back play that fooled Schaefer, but it would be #29 for the opposing team, Morten Madsen, who netted the game-winner, securing a 2-1 victory for Houston Friday night.
