Late goal secures 3-2 Moose victory

Rebounding from a shutout loss and halting a three-game losing skid, the Manitoba Moose earned a 3-2 victory over the Quad City Flames Saturday night. Jason Jaffray scored a second-period goal and then the game-winner in the final minute, and Drew MacIntyre stopped 32 of 34 shots for the Moose win.

First Period

Making his second consecutive start and looking for a better result than Friday night's 4-0 shutout loss, Drew MacIntyre manned the net for Manitoba. Plenty of time in the neutral zone meant MacIntyre and his goaltending counterpart Brent Krahn saw little action through the first five minutes.

The first powerplay of the game did little to test the netminders, as Manitoba's man-advantage at the five-minute mark failed to result in a single shot on net. A second Flames penalty 20 seconds into even-strength hockey gave the Moose another shot at cracking the scoreboard, but Krahn stopped all three shots directed at his net.

As Quad City gained ground on the shot-clock, Danny Groulx took Manitoba's first penalty of the game at 10:19. Less than 30 seconds into the powerplay, Krys Kolanos snapped a sharp-angle shot over MacIntyre's right shoulder to give the Flames the first lead of the game.

With five minutes left on the clock, Nathan McIver and Brandon Prust squared off at center ice, trading punches and earning five each for fighting. Seconds after the scrap, two consecutive Moose penalties to Colby Genoway and Shaun Heshka gave the Flames their first five-on-three for 1:07. Playing shorthanded worked in Manitoba's favour, however, as Alexandre Bolduc surged past Flames defenders to score an unassisted shorthanded goal on a breakaway.

Though the score was tied at one after one period of play, the Moose trailed the Flames 12-5 in shots.

Second Period

Within the first three minutes of the second, Manitoba more than doubled their shot count by firing six shots on net. But it was Manitoba's eighth second-period shot that really counted, as Jason Jaffray capitalized on a bang-on Genoway pass and tucked it past Krahn to give the visitors their first lead of the game.

Just over three minutes later, the Flames earned the equalizer. Although MacIntyre stopped an initial Cam Cunning shot, the rebound went straight out to Manitoba-native Brad Cole who fired from the top of the circle and into the back of the Moose net. The rookie's goal -- his first in the AHL -- tied the game at two.

After 16 penalties in the first, Quad City earned the lone penalty of the second, a hooking minor to Gerry Burke at 9:07. By the end of the middle frame, the Moose had tallied 17 shots compared to the Flames' 24, and the game remained tied at two.

Third Period

Three minutes into the third, Manitoba Captain Mike Keane took a holding penalty, offering Quad City their fifth powerplay of the game. Managing only one shot through the man-advantage, the Flames failed to find the go-ahead goal and coughed up penalties of their own at 6:12 and 12:10.

Consecutive Moose powerplays kept Krahn busy in the Flames crease, but the home penalty-killers continued to stifle Manitoba's man-advantage and the Moose went 0-for-6 on the powerplay. But as it did in the second period, Manitoba's top line connected during five-on-five play and Jaffray put the Moose ahead with 58 seconds left to play.

Six Quad City skaters and a scramble in front of MacIntyre's net wasn't enough for the Flames to tie it up, and Manitoba pulled away with a 3-2 victory Saturday night in Moline, Illinois.
