Moose drop 5-4 OT decision to Monsters

After both teams traded 78 shots and several one-goal leads through three periods of play, the Lake Erie Monsters defeated the Manitoba Moose 5-4 in overtime Saturday night. Monsters netminder Jason Bacashihua stopped 42 of 46 shots for the win, while Moose forward Greg Classen led all skaters with two goals and an assist.

First Period

Making his second start in as many nights and playing his second game against Lake Erie, Cory Schneider manned the net for the Moose, facing 25-year-old Monsters goalie Jason Bacashihua.

After three minutes of back-and-forth play, Moose forward Alexandre Bolduc was called for hooking and Lake Erie benefited from the first powerplay of the game. But Manitoba's penalty killers kept the game scoreless through the man-advantage, and the club's powerplay unit soon received their chance to shine when the Monsters' Mark Rycroft headed to the box.

Only 50 seconds into the powerplay, Mason Raymond directed a slick pass to Greg Classen at the crease, and #19 redirected it into Bacashihua's net to extend his point-streak to six games and give the Moose the first lead of the game.

Midway through the first, a two-on-one rush tested Schneider's mettle, and though the rookie goalie stopped Wes O'Neill's initial shot, the rebound proved to be the equalizer for Lake Erie.

Though the Monsters tied the game and led the shot-count 13-8, a ninth shot was all the Moose required to reclaim their lead as Jannik Hansen fired his first of the season past Bacashihua. After 20 minutes of play and a short post-buzzer scuffle, the clock read 2-1 in favour of Manitoba.

Second Period

With Nathan McIver and Stephen Margeson serving roughing minors and 10-minute misconducts, the Moose and Monsters showed extra intensity at the start of the second. Five minutes in, that intensity translated into offense for Lake Erie. In the span of 35 seconds, Mark McCutcheon scored his first of the season and David Jones one-timed a rocket past Schneider to give the Monsters their first lead of the game.

With five minutes left in the middle frame, the Moose received their third powerplay and first man-advantage opportunity to even things up. As he did in the first period, Classen made it happen on the five-on-four, beating Bacashihua to tie the game at three.

The Moose out-shot the Monsters 17-4 in the second period, putting them up 30-22 heading into the third.

Third Period

1:25 into the final frame, Jason Jaffray headed to the box and was soon joined by Danny Groulx, dealing the Monsters their second and third powerplays of the game and a 38-second five-on-three. Although Manitoba killed those two man-advantages, Michael Grabner received an interference minor at 5:14, keeping Moose penalty-killers on duty through much of the first half of the third.

On the return of five-on-five play, Mark Rycroft fired shortly after a face-off and beat Schneider at 7:21 to restore Lake Erie's one-goal lead. The infractions continued through most of the third, but penalties to the Moose and Monsters -- including a five-on-three opportunity for Manitoba -- failed to result in additional scoring for either team.

With Schneider sitting on the bench and the Moose net sitting open, Brad Moran capitalized on chaos in front of the Monsters net by scoring the game-tying goal at 19:06 to force overtime.

Overtime

1:26 into the extra period, Manitoba's Zack FitzGerald took a holding penalty, forcing two minutes of four-on-three sudden death. And sudden death it was for the Moose, as Chris Stewart snapped the puck over Schneider's left shoulder to secure a 5-4 overtime win for the Lake Erie Monsters.
