Marlies end Moose win streak with 5-3 victory

The Toronto Marlies stopped the streaking Manitoba Moose Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 win at Ricoh Coliseum. Undefeated Marlies goaltender Scott Clemmensen earned the win for Toronto, while Drew MacIntyre suffered his first loss to Toronto in six career games played with Manitoba.

First Period

In contrast to last night's scrappy Moose-Americans affair, both Manitoba and Toronto managed to stay out of the penalty box through most of the first period. But special teams weren't required for Toronto to score the first goal of the game, as Colin Murphy dribbled the puck past Drew MacIntyre to net his third of the season on the home team's third shot of the game.

Forcing Manitoba's penalty killers to face the best powerplay in the AHL, Luc Bourdon received the first penalty of the game with just over seven minutes left in the opening frame. After killing the first man-advantage, the Moose were faced with another five-on-four situation less than a minute later, as Manitoba's leading scorer Jason Jaffray was relegated the box for hooking.

Once back to full-strength, a few fantastic scoring chances by Ryan Shannon and Jozef Balej helped Manitoba gain some ground in the shot department, but Toronto held onto their 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Second Period

On the powerplay for the first time, Manitoba was gunning to break Toronto's airtight penalty-killing unit early in the second. No dice for the visitors, however, as Toronto maintained their 100% PK status.

A scuffle in Scott Clemmensen's crease resulted in an unsportsmanlike penalty to Mike Brown, but the Moose stifled the Marlies' powerplay for the third time in the game. Though the powerplay couldn't connect, an even-strength Marlies crew, led by Captain David Ling, eventually found the back of the net. A bench-minor served by Shaun Heshka gave the Marlies powerplay another shot, and they quickly netted the game's third -- and then fourth -- goals of the game to put the home team up 4-0.

Eager to break their goose-egg, the Moose found their scoring touch with rookie forward Pierre-Cedric Labrie, who converted a pass from Alex Bolduc to get the Moose on the scoreboard heading into the final period.

Third Period

Increasing their shot total to 27 vs. Manitoba's 19, Toronto dominated the first few minutes of the third, keeping MacIntyre on his toes in the Moose crease. The Moose struck first, however, as Danny Groulx fed Colby Genoway from behind the Marlie's net to put the Moose within two midway through the third.

As play returned towards MacIntyre, Jason Jaffray and Jaime Sifers held back near Clemmensen, squaring off for a short fight in the Toronto zone. As four-on-four hockey took over the ice, Mike Brown penetrated the Marlies defence and slipped Manitoba's third goal of the game past Clemmensen to narrow the gap.

But the one-goal game would soon return to two, as Darryl Boyce gave the Marlies a 5-3 lead with five minutes left in the game. Toronto would hold on for the win, dealing Manitoba their second regulation loss in 17 games played vs. the Marlies.
