Moose make it three in a row over Amerks

It took five minutes of overtime and a shootout, but the Manitoba Moose secured their third win in four nights over the Americans in Rochester Friday night. Grabner, Jaffray, Genoway, Moran, and Balej scored for Manitoba, while rookie goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 32 of 37 shots for the shootout win.

First Period

With rookie goaltender Cory Schneider in net for the Moose and Adam Dennis backstopping the Americans, Manitoba and Rochester began their third clash in four days in New York. A shutout in Game 1 and a blowout in Game 2 meant the Amerks were seeking revenge on home turf, stoking a heated divisional rivalry for their hometown crowd.

A handful of Rochester penalties gave Manitoba's powerplay the opportunity to repeat Wednesday night's four-goal feat, but the Americans showcased air-tight penalty-killing through the first half of the first.

Heavy checks in the Americans' corner and again behind the Manitoba net resulted in an interference penalty to Mike Brown, followed shortly by a hooking penalty to Jason Jaffray, giving Rochester their first two-man advantage for 18 seconds. Despite stifling two full minutes of the home team's initial powerplay, Schneider struggled to see through a jumble of players in his crease and allowed the first goal of the game -- a powerplay marker by Clarke MacArthur.

With Jaffray out of the box and the Moose eager to even things up, play quickly returned to the Amerks zone. In the dying seconds of the first period, Michael Grabner positioned himself at the top of Dennis' crease and capitalized on slick pass from Colby Genoway to tie the game for Manitoba.

Second Period

The give-and-take continued in the second period. With both teams down a player, Jaffray backhanded the puck over Dennis' left shoulder to put the Moose up 2-1. 19 seconds later, the Americans countered with a four-on-four goal of their own, delivered by Martin Lojek at the two-minute mark.

Rough play continued to hurt the Moose as the period progressed, and Rochester benefited from their eighth powerplay and second two-man advantage with just over five minutes left on the clock. Closing in on Schneider and three lonely Moose defenders, MacArthur led the Americans' attack and notched his second powerplay goal of the game to restore the Rochester lead.

Third Period

Down eight shots and one goal as the third period got underway, the Moose drew a hooking penalty and embarked on their sixth powerplay of the game. Rebounding from a shorthanded breakaway attempt from the Americans, rookie forward Juraj Simak powered his way back to the Rochester zone, stickhandled past the defender, and slipped a pass to Colby Genoway who netted the game-tying goal.

The balanced score didn't last long, however, as Rochester regained their lead -- and then extended it to two goals -- within two minutes of returning to even strength. Poised at the point, Lojek one-timed his second of the game at 6:05, followed shortly by Drew Larman's first of the game at 8:03.

Stepping up to shorten -- and then eliminate -- the gap, Manitoba's top line soon secured the club's fourth and fifth goals of the game. Brad Moran slipped the puck through Dennis' pads at 9:05, and four minutes later, Jozef Balej tied the game at five on a feed from linemates Moran and Jaffray.

Overtime

Athletic, key saves at both ends of the ice highlighted five minutes of four-on-four overtime, but neither team managed to net the winner and the Moose headed to their first shootout of the season.

Shootout

Although Marc-Andre Gragni netted the first shootout goal for the Americans, Manitoba countered with solid goaltending by Schneider and goals by Balej and Genoway to earn two points in the standings on a 6-5 shootout victory over Rochester.
