Moose earn first win of the season

It took two-and-a-half periods for the puck to hit the back of the net, but that first goal by rookie defenceman Luc Bourdon would also prove to be the game-winner for Manitoba. Despite being outshot 32-19, the Moose secured a 1-0 win over the Rochester Americans at the MTS Centre, and Drew MacIntyre earned his first shutout of the season.

First Period

Energized by the desire to notch their first win of the season, the Moose spent much of the first few minutes of the game in the Americans zone, but a handful of wide slapshots from the point kept the shot-total low. A hooking penalty to Manitoba's Maxime Fortunus gave the Americans the game's first powerplay, but Moose penalty killers looked sharp, managing a three-on-one shorthanded rush late in the penalty.

With both teams at even-strength, Manitoba's Mike Brown and Rochester's Tanner Glass participated in the home team's second fight of the season, followed closely by the third at the final buzzer. With 0.0 on the clock, Moose sniper Jason Jaffray and Americans forward Kenndal McArdle scrapped near the benches and along the red line. Despite losing an elbow pad and his jersey, Jaffray delivered a handful of blows before toppling over McArdle and heading off the ice, his extra two minutes for charging on the clock.

Second Period

Up 9-5 in shots at the start of the second, the Americans were blessed with an early two-man advantage, thanks to a tripping penalty to Manitoba's Mike Brown. With quick cross-crease saves, a magnetic glovehand, and controlled rebounds, Drew MacIntyre kept the Americans off the scoreboard, stopping all 21 shots directed at him -- including six by Kamil Kreps and five by Clarke MacArthur -- by the end of the middle frame.

Third Period

MacIntyre's impenetrable goaltending continued through the early minutes of the third period, highlighted by multiple key saves during Colby Genoway's hooking penalty six minutes in.

It would take a penalty to the visiting Americans, however, before the scoreless stalemate was broken. With Rochester’s Mike Weber in the box for slashing, Luc Bourdon fired a wrist shot from the top of the circle that found its way past Dennis’ glovehand and into the net. It was the rookie defenceman’s third point and second goal in three games this season, securing his spot at the top of the Moose leaderboard.

With the clock ticking down, the Americans opted for the extra attacker, pulling Dennis from his net with 1:30 remaining. But six skaters and a 13-shot lead wasn't enough for the Americans to force overtime, and Manitoba earned their first win of the season 1-0 over Rochester.
