Despite tying the game late in the third period, the Manitoba Moose were unable to secure a win in extra time, falling 4-3 to the Griffins on Saturday night. Carl Corazzini scored the game-winner for Grand Rapids, and Cory Schneider made his pro debut in net for the Moose.

First Period

Manitoba benefited from the first powerplay of the game after Griffins forward Mattias Ritola was sent to the box for boarding. Despite registering their first few shots on the man advantage, Manitoba failed to capitalize, and the play soon returned to the Moose zone once the Griffins were back at even-strength. With Grand Rapids pressing hard, rookie Moose netminder Cory Schneider was called upon to make the first big saves of his pro career.

Back-and-forth play through much of the first paid off for the Moose with just under two-minutes left. Experienced line-mates Jason Jaffray and Brad Moran took first blood for Manitoba, as Moran tipped in Jaffray's cross-crease pass to net the first goal of the game. Grand Rapids' Mark Hartigan was quick to tie the game, however, as he slipped the puck past Schneider with one-second left on the clock.

Second Period

Neck and neck with Manitoba in shots and goals after the first, Grand Rapids' penalty killers were once again put to the test, and Griffins netminder Adam Berkhoel was called-upon to make a handful of key saves. As Adam Keefe's hooking penalty ran out mid-way through the middle frame, the former Moose tough-guy beelined to the home net and converted a pass by Brett Engelhardt into the Griffins' second goal of the game.

As in the previous period, the Griffins offense clicked in the final moment of the frame, and with a glove-side write-shot, Ryan Oulahan gave Grand Rapids a two-goal lead with 35-seconds left on the clock. A disallowed Moose goal due to a dislodged net ensured the Griffins headed into the third period with a 3-1 lead.

Third Period

With his eye on the net and a crisp pass from Maxime Fortunus, rookie Moose defender Luc Bourdon one-timed a rocket past Berkhoel to close the gap just over a minute into the third. 16 minutes later, Moran propelled into the Griffins zone and descended on Berkhoel, snapping back his own rebound to tie the game at three and force extra time.

Overtime

Two minutes into the four-on-four overtime, Grand Rapids’ Carl Corazzini pounced on a blocked pass and powered past Fortunus for the breakaway and resulting unassisted game-winning goal.
