The Manitoba Moose rebounded from their 3-0 loss last night to earn a hard fought 3-1 victory over the Toronto Marlies. The win allowed the Moose to tie a franchise record for their best February ever as they finished the month earning 21 of a possible 24 points. Manitoba is now alone in first place in the North Division standings with 75 points and a 32-17-7-4 record.

First Period

Drew MacIntyre starts in goal today for the Moose while Justin Pogge starts for the Marlies.

The scoring started early as Colby Genoway fed a nice backhand pass from in behind the Marlies net to an unmarked Brandon Reid who one-timed a shot past Justin Pogge for the opening goal of the game just 2:00 in. The goal was Reid's 13th of the season with Genoway and Schultz drawing the assists.

Mike Keane took the first penalty of the game for interference at 2:19. The Moose were able to kill it off without incedent.

Manitoba got their first chance with the man-advantage at the 5:51 mark as Tyson Nash took a slashing penalty. Patrick Coulombe rang a shot off the post on the powerplay but that's as close as the Moose would come.

The Moose went right back to the powerplay at 8:39 when Chris Harrington interfered with Colby Genoway as he tried to chase the puck into the Marlies zone.

Brandon Reid pulled down Tyson Nash 0:20 into the man-advantage to nulify the powerplay for the Moose.

The teams skated 4-on-4 for a while before Colin Murphy pulled down Nathan Smith to put the Moose on a 4-on-3 powerplay.

Lee Goren fed Jason Jaffray in front of the net where he backhanded a shot off the crossbar as he beat Pogge but not the bar.

The teams returned to 5-on-5 and the Moose struck right away to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Jason Jaffray carried the puck across the Marlies blueline then fed a cross-ice pass to Lee Goren who spotted Nathan Smith headed for the goal where he hit him in stride. Smith stuck his stick out to redirect the puck high over the glove of Justin Pogge. The goal came at 13:13 of the period

The Moose surrendered their first in-game penalty shot of the season and their first since Apr. 8/06 in Toronto where Wade Flaherty stopped Bates Battaglia in overtime.

This time Shaun Heshka hooked Brett Engelhardt as he broke in all alone on Drew MacIntyre. Referee Steve Koharski immediately pointed to centre ice to signify the penalty shot.

Englehardt came in on MacIntyre and tried to go forehand-to-backhand, but D-Mac stuck with the Marlies winger forcing him wide where he missed the net.

Shortly after the penalty shot save, the Marlies looked as though they would be going back on the powerplay when J.J. Hunter tripped Colin Murphy to the ice. However, Steve Koharski felt that Murphy embellished the play and called him for diving on the play as well.

The Marlies had a great 3-on-2 opportunity in the Moose zone but Drew MacIntyre came up with a huge glove save as he swooped the puck over the net to keep Toronto off the board.

The period came to an end with the Marlies leading 10-7 in shots but trailing 2-0 on the scoresheet.

Second Period

Yannick Tremblay put the Moose up 3-0 as he jumped on a loose puck in the Marlies zone and absolutely blasted it top shelf past Justin Pogge. Tremblay's opportunity came as a shot missed the net and bounced hard off the end boards right out to the Moose defenceman who pinched in and ripped home his 10th of the season.

Tremblay took the first penalty of the period for the Moose as he hooked Ben Ondruss to the ice in the Moose corner.

On the subsequent powerplay the Marlies came close to scoring a few times. First, in a scramble in the crease where Colin Murphy hit the post as he tried to get the puck past a sprawling Drew MacIntyre. Then just as the penalty expired, MacIntyre made a fantastic glove save on Colin Murphy again to keep his shutout alive.

Mike Brown was given a roughing penalty on that play to put the Moose down a man one more time. This time the Moose did a much better job limiting the Marlies chances as they killed the penalty off without incedent.

The penalty came to a close with the Moose leading by a 3-0 score despite being outshot by a large margin 21-11 through two periods.

Third Period

The Marlies finally capitalized on a chance as Colin Murphy turned and fired a shot along the left boards towards the net. The puck squeezed between the pad of MacIntyre and the post to put the Marlies on the board early in the third period. Aleksander Suglobov and Erik Westrum drew the assists on the goal at 1:23.

Drew MacIntyre kept the Moose lead at two goals as he stoned Erik Westrum not once but twice on the doorstep, then Aleksander Suglobov on the rebound.

With the Marlies trying to claw their way back into the game, Erik Westrum took a slashing penalty in the offensive zone to put the Marlies on the penalty-kill.

Just 0:26 into the powerplay chance for the Moose J.J. Hunter took a high-sticking penalty to nulify the remainder of the man-advantage and put the teams 4-on-4.

The extra room on the ice didn't result in any chances but after returning to 5-on-5 action Brad Leeb got caught for hitting Alex Edler from behind into the end boards behind the Moose net. Steve Koharski gave hime 2:00 for boarding on the play to further handicap the Marlies comeback effort.

The Marlies tried to get Justin Pogge out of the net for the extra attacker but they couldn't as the Moose forced the Marlies into several icings with a strong fore-check.

The game came to an end with a fizzle as the Marlies never threatened late, allowing the Moose to rebound with their 32nd victory of the season and their fourth of the year over the Marlies.

The Moose will now head home where they will play host to Toronto next Friday and Saturday at the MTS Centre.
