Moose win again, 3-2 in OT

By Travis Kondratuk
www.moosehockey.com

Trailing 2-0 in the game, the Moose battled all the way back, scoring the game-tying goal with just 0:46 left to play sending it to overtime. Mike Keane scored the game-winner 1:49 into extra time, flipping a backhand over the glove of Ty Conklin to give the Moose their sixth straight victory. Drew MacIntyre stopped 41 of the 43 shots fired his way to earn his 16th win of the season in goal for the Moose.

First Period

Drew MacIntyre gets the starting nod between the pipes for the Moose tonight, while Ty Conklin gets the start for the Crunch.

The Moose got the first powerplay opportunity of the game, when Jeffrey Szwez was given a hooking penalty at 3:09 of the first.

Things didn't go as planned on the powerplay for the Moose as Adam Pineault scored his 12th goal of the year for the Crunch, a shorthanded marker to give Syracuse the 1-0 lead at 3:49. Pineault fired a shot on Drew MacIntyre that he looked to stop, but the puck just squeezed through and trickled across the goal line to open the scoring. The shorthanded goal is the first shorty the Moose have surrendered since Dec. 16/06 versus the Houston Aeros.

The Moose had trouble getting pressure in the Crunch zone as they trailed 16-5 in shots through 15:00 of play.

Drew MacIntyre robbed the Crunch of a sure goal as he made a fantastic diving save to stop Darcy Verot at the left side of the Moose goal. A cross-ice pass came to Verot just outside the Moose crease and MacIntyre dove across with his stick extended to break up the scoring play and hold the deficit to one goal.

Tomas Kloucek took consecutive minor penalties for the Crunch, first for tripping and then for interference to give the Moose some life. Manitoba could not capitalize with the man-advantage as they finished the first 20:00 trailing 1-0. The final shot totals were 17-8 in the first, while the Moose went 0-for-3 on the powerplay.

Second Period

After the Crunch did a nice job of keeping the Moose pinned in their own zone, Curtis Glencross tipped home his 10th of the year off a point shot from Marc Methot, putting the Syracuse Crunch up 2-0 at the 4:23 mark of the second.

With the Moose on their fifth powerplay of the game, Brad Moran intercepted a clearing attempt from Ty Conklin and wristed a shot over the shoulder of the Crunch goaltender to cut the Syracuse lead to one goal. The unassisted powerplay marker was Moran's 17th of the season and his first since being re-assigned to the Moose from the Canucks earlier in the day.

Drew MacIntyre has faced 34 shots through the first 40:00 against the Crunch. The 34 shots through two periods for Syracuse is more than they have registered in any complete game versus Manitoba this season. Their highest total was 32 shots on goal heading into this game.

Third Period

The Moose's first ranked penalty-kill went back to work as Nathan Smith took the first penalty of the period, a hooking call at the 3:24 mark. The team did a nice job of killing off the Crunch advantage leaving Syracuse 2-for-33 on the powerplay versus the Moose this season, an uninspiring 6%.

Prestin Ryan was hit hard behind the Moose net on from check by Ben Simon. The Moose defenceman stayed down on the ice for a few minutes before being helped off by Yannick Tremblay and Jason Jaffray.

The Moose were desparate to get the game-tying goal but the Moose could do no more than put shots on goal from the perimeter, as the Crunch did a good job of keeping the Moose to the boards.

Manitoba got the chance they needed as Marc Methot took a penalty with just 1:28 left in the game. Scott Arniel took his time out to set things up for his team.

Drew MacIntyre came out of the net with 1:15 left in the game to give the Moose a 6-on-4 advantage.

Syracuse Coach Ross Yates called his time out to discuss what he wanted from his team defensively with 1:05 left.

Jesse Schultz playing the point on the powerplay for the Moose, stepped into a soft pass from Brad Moran, blasting it past Ty Conklin to tie the game for the Moose. Nathan Smith was creating a screen in front of Conklin on the play.

Brad Moran teed up Jesse Schultz with a nice pass that #22 stepped into, blasting it past Ty Conklin to tie the game for the Moose. The powerplay marker came with just 0:46 left in the game.

That goal sent the game into overtime.

Overtime

Nathan Smith carried the puck all the way into the Crunch zone from behind his own goal before dishing a pass to Mike Keane. The Captain skated across the face of goal and backhanded a shot over the shoulder of Ty Conklin to seal the victory for the Moose at 1:49 of OT.

Keane skated off the ice so quickly it looked like he stole something. Which is just what the Moose did this evening, battling all the way back from a 2-0 deficit to earn their sixth straight win, tying their season long win streak.

The Moose improved their season record to 28-16-7-4 and improved their series record versus the Crunch to 5-0-2-0.
