FINALLY! Moose win shootout 3-2

By Travis Kondratuk
www.moosehockey.com

The Moose could not pot the game-winner in overtime, even though they enjoyed a 4-on-3 powerplay for the entire extra frame. However the team rallied, enduring a 14 shooter marathon that saw Lee Goren score the game-winner, roofing a shot glove side on Ty Conklin. Drew MacIntyre made a nice pad save on Adam Pineault to seal the victory for the Moose, their first shootout win of the season in five tries. The win improves the Moose overall record to 24-16-7-4 on the season, and 3-0-2-0 versus Syracuse this year.

First Period

Manitoba drew the first powerplay chance as Ryan Caldwell took a hooking minorfor the Crunch at the 4:39 mark of the period.

The Moose looked a little out of sorts as they tried to get used to some new line mates, with the callups of Brad Moran and Brandon Reid to the Canucks earlier in the day.

Manitoba couldn't convert on the man-advantage and only seconds after the penalty to Caldwell expired, the Crunch opened the scoring as Curtis Glencross slapped a rebound through the pads of Drew MacIntyre at the top of the Moose crease. The goal came at 4:02 with Marc Methot and Alexandre Picard drawing the assists.

The Moose came right back only :38 later and scored a goal of their own to tie the game. J.J. Hunter scored his first goal since Dec. 10/06 versus the Peoria Rivermen as he roofed a shot over the shoulder of Ty Conklin. Mike Keane dug the puck out on the left-hand boards and fed a nice touch pass to Hunter who wristed home his third goal for the Moose this season.

Patrick Coulombe got "crunched" from behind in the corner of the Moose zone by Zenon Kenopka. The Syracuse centre was given a 2:00 boarding penalty on the play.

The Moose killed off a slashing penalty to Nathan McIver and scored just :04 after the penalty had expired, as Dustin Wood notched his third goal of the season. J.J. Hunter fed a nice soft pass to Wood at the point, who stepped into a one-timer that bulged the twine stick-side on Ty Conklin. The goal put the Moose up 2-1 at the 14:46 mark of the first.

A slow start to the game picked up as both teams found their legs in the last half of the first period. The Moose lead 8-7 after 20:00 of play.

Second Period

With Drew MacIntyre down and out after getting run into by Zenon Konopka, his blocker came off after Konopka stepped on it, yet the referee allowed the play to continue. Curtis Glencross circled the Moose net and lifted the puck into the open cage over the helpless goaltender, tying the game for the visitors. The goal was Glencross' second of the night, with the assists going to Konopka and Tomas Kloucek at 4:11 of the second.

MacIntyre was furious that the play was not blown dead on the goal and was assessed a 2:00 penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct for his outburst. The team was able to kill of the penalty however, leaving the score tied at two goals apiece.

The Moose were assessed a bench minor for two many men that was served by Jannik Hansen. Upon exiting the box, Hansen broke in with Jason Jaffray and Lee Goren. That line had some chemistry early in the season and looked good on this shift as they wreaked havoc in the Crunch zone.

Referee Francois St. Laurent wasn't making any friends with the Moose fans as he called a hooking penalty on Syracuse defenceman Tomas Kloucek but also called Jesse Schultz for unsporstmanlike diving on the play. The fans rained down boos of disapproval at the call from the stands.

Neither team could mustre another goal as the teams ended the second period tied at two goals apiece, with the Moose holding the slight advantage in shots at 17-16.

Third Period

Drew MacIntyre made a sparkling glove save on Ryan Caldwell to keep the game tied at the 11:18 mark of the third. The Moose had yet to register a shot to that point of the period.

Colby Genoway took a hooking penalty at 9:02 of the third, putting the Moose penalty-kill to the test once again. Drew MacIntyre stepped up with another nice save, this time off a Derrick Walser point shot with Zenon Konopka parked right in front his crease creating a screen. MacIntyre made a few more saves to help kill the penalty and keep the game tied.

With Dustin Wood in the box for hooking, the Moose had a great chance shorthanded as Mike Keane broke in on the Crunch net, but the play was broken up and Joakim Lindstrom was sent in all alone on the Moose goal down the left wing. MacIntyre came up big once again as he flashed the leather, making a spectacular glove save to keep the Moose in the game.

The Moose were on their heels for the bulk of the final period as they could only manage one shot on net in the third. MacIntyre held the fort for the home squad as he made 15 saves in the period for the Moose.

Syracuse forward Andrew Murray was given a 5:00 high-sticking major at the 20:00 mark which would give the Moose the man-advantage for the entire overtime period.

Overtime

Playing 4-on-3 thanks to the Murray penalty the Moose worked the puck around in the Crunch zone. Try as they might the Moose could not get a puck past Conklin in the Crunch net. So Scott Arniel called a timeout to get everyone on the same page with :41.9 to play in overtime and the face-off in the Crunch zone.

The Moose could not solve the Crunch penalty-kill and this game would require a shoot-out to decide a winner.
