Penguins outlast Moose in 4-2 victory

By Travis Kondratuk
www.moosehockey.com

The Moose threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the third period but came up just short in a 4-2 loss. The Moose pulled goalie Julien Ellis with just over a minute to go but could not get the game-tying goal past Andrew Penner. Connor James sealed the victory with an empty-netter leaving the Moose winless on the season versus the Baby Pens. The Moose finished the season with a 3-7-1-1 record against East Division opponents and a 0-2-1-1 record versus Wilkes-Barre.

First Period

Julien Ellis gets the start tonight in place of Drew MacIntyre who injured himself in practice yesterday. Newly acquired Jeff Pietrasiak takes over the back-up goaltending duties for the night.

The Moose got to test their number two ranked penalty kill versus the number one ranked powerplay unit in the league of the Penguins, as Alex Edler took a tripping penalty at 2:19 of the first. Ellis flashed the leather on Marc-Antoine Pouliot as he broke in on the left wing and wristed a shot that was labelled for the top corner.

Just as the penalty to Edler expired, the Penguins struck to take the early lead. Pouliot took the puck along the left hand boards and fed a pass down low to Kurtis McLean at the side of the Moose net. McLean then dished a pass to Jean-Francois Jacques at the top of the crease who one-timed the feed past Julien Ellis, putting the home squad up 1-0 at the 4:20 mark.

Brandon Reid finished off a nice passing play at 11:23 of the first to tie the game at ones. Nathan Smith carried the puck across the Pens' blueline and then dropped it for Jannik Hansen just inside the line. Looking up, he spotted a streaking Brandon Reid, where Hansen threaded a beautiful cross-ice pass right on the tape of Reid who made no mistake redirecting the puck past Andrew Penner to tie the game for the Moose.

Daniel Carcillo put an exclamation mark on a nice individual effort, as he dangled around several Moose players on the right hand boards before walking out front and firing a wrist shot over the glove of Julien Ellis at 15:19 to restore the one goal lead for the Penguins.

The Moose failed to register a shot in the final 7:30 of the first period and should thank Julien Ellis for keeping them in the game, as they were outshot 14-4 in the opening frame.

Second Period

The Moose were granted two early powerplays in the second period but the Penguins did not allow Manitoba to get much going as the Moose could only muster a single shot on goal between both powerplay chances.

Adam Keefe and Daniel Carcillo deceided to breathe some life into a stagnant second period as they squared off at centre ice with :42 left in the frame. Keefe got the early upperhand landing a big blow but Carcillo finished the fight as he landed a haymaker that sent Keefe to the ice. Both players were assessed 5:00 majors for fighting.

A rather uneventful period came to an end the same way that it started as the Penguins hold a slim one goal lead after two periods. The two teams could only manage seven shots on goal between them in the middle frame.

Third Period

The Moose managed to tie the game as Prestin Ryan finished off some sustained pressure in the Wilkes-Barre zone. Lee Goren broke in on the right wing and fed Jesse Schultz in front of the Pens' net where he one-timed a shot off the post. The puck bounced to the left boards where Schultz reclaimed the rebound and fed Prestin Ryan at the point. Ryan stepped in and wristed a shot that fooled a distracted Andrew Penner who was trying to look around Lee Goren standing in front of the Wilkes-Barre net. The game-tying goal came at 2:44 of the third.

The Moose gave the number one ranked Penguins powerplay too many chances as the home side capitalized on a two-man advantage to regain their one goal lead. With Jason Jaffray in the box for tripping and then Lee Goren for high-sticking the Penguins went to work on the powerplay. Jonathan Filewich parked at the top of the crease redirected a pass from Marc-Antoine Pouliot to put the Pens up 3-2. The Moose killed off the remainder of the second penalty to Goren, leaving the Pens 1-for-6 on the powerplay.

The Moose got a powerplay opportunity of their own to try and tie the game as Daniel Carcillo got into it with Mike Brown and was called for trying to spear him.

The Moose could not take advantage of their powerplay and fell to 0-for-7 on the game.

Scott Arniel called his time-out with 1:08 left in the game to try and rally the troops for one last push to tie the game. Julien Ellis stayed on the bench as the Moose went with the extra attacker to try and tie it.

Unfortunately the Moose comeback effort fell short as Connor James iced the victory for the home squad potting an empty-netter with just :06 left in the game.

The Moose outshot the Penguins 14-5 in the final frame but it wasn't enough, as the Moose finished the season 0-2-1-1 versus Wilkes-Barre. Julein Ellis fell to 0-and-4 on the season but deserved better as he played well in the loss.
