Moose defeat Amerks in fight night

By Travis Kondratuk
www.moosehockey.com

For 59:30 of the hockey game everything seemed to go as planned for the Moose as the team held a two-goal advantage on the first place Americans. Unfortunately all hell broke loose in the final minute and in the melee Wade Flaherty was injured trying to pull a player off his team-mate. No word as to the severity of the injury at this point. The rematch promises to be a spirited affair tomorrow night at the MTS Centre as the Moose will look to move into a tie with the Americans with a victory. Remember the game tomorrow is a special tribute game to Hockey Canada. The Moose will wear a special third jersey and Jennifer Botterill will raise a special banner recognizing the 2007 World Women's Hockey Championships to be held at the MTS Centre from April 3rd to 10th, 2007. Game time is 7:30PM CDT.

First Period

After both teams started a little slowly, with the bulk of the play coming in the neutral zone Mike Brown took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at the 7:44 mark of the first period.

Clarke MacArthur scored his 15th goal of the season and his fourth versus the Moose this year to put the Americans up 1-0. MacArthur fired a wrist shot from the right face-off circle through a pile of bodies in front of the Moose net, that found its way through the legs of Wade Flaherty. Drew Stafford and Brandon Smith assisted on the first goal of the game at 7:59.

The Moose responded quickly just 1:13 later as Yannick Tremblay scored his fifth goal of the season to tie the game for the Moose. Tremblay wristed a shot from the point that beat Rochester netminder Craig Anderson clean over the right shoulder at 9:12. Brandon Reid and Jannik Hansen assisted on the goal.

With the Moose enjoying their first powerplay of the game, Yannick Tremblay got his second goal of the game as he stepped into a slapper from the point that whistled past Anderson. Jason Jaffray was parked in front of the Rochester netminder causing a major distraction. Moran and Jaffray picked up the assists on the go-ahead goal at the 11:56 mark.

Kamil Kreps scored on a wrap-around that crawled up and over the pad of Wade Flaherty and dropped in behind him to tie the game for the Americans. Daniel Paille and Greg Jacina drew the assists on the game-tying goal at the 15:00 mark.

Second Period

On what looked like a set play off the offensive face-off, Lee Goren won the draw forward and fed a nice pass out front to Brad Moran who had broke to the net. Moran was left with an easy tap in for his 15th goal of the season to put the Moose up 3-2.

Drew Larman scored his ninth goal of the season as he finished off a nice passing play to tie the game for the visiting squad. Rob Globke and Greg Jacina assisted on the game-tying goal at 6:53.

The Moose got a lucky break as Rochester failed to capitalize on a 2-on-0 from their own blueline, as the Rochester forward missed the net with his shot.

Jesse Schultz playing the point on the Moose powerplay, stepped into a one-timer that rocketed past Craig anderson low to the right side. Brad Moran and Lee Goren drew the assists on the go-ahead goal at 16:24.

With the Moose on the powerplay for the third time in the game, Alex Edler blasted a shot from the point that Craig Anderson stopped but he lost the handle on the rebound and the puck squirted loose to the side of the crease. Jannik Hansen was "Johnny on the Spot" as he whacked home the juicy rebound for his sixth goal of the season. That goal leaves the Moose a perfect 3-for-3 on the powerplay afer two periods. Nathan Smith and Alex Edler drew the assists on the powerplay marker at 19:04.

Third Period

Rochester cut the Moose laed to one goal as Drew Stafford demonstarted some quick hands to wrap in a loose puck from behind the net. Rob Globke fired a shot at the Moose goal that missed the net and bounced hard off the end boards. Stafford gained control of the rebound and tapped it in as Wade Flaherty had slid wide of the post trying to stop the initial shot.

Right after Yannick Tremblay hustled back to break-up a shorthanded chance in his own zone, the Moose came right back up the ice and scored their fourth powerplay goal of the game. Lee Goren carried the puck over the blueline fed a pass down low to Brad Moran who spotted Jason Jaffray streaking back-door. Jaffray redirected the nice feed past Craig Anderson for his team-leading 21st goal of the season.

Things got out of hand with just over :35 left to play in the game as Mike Brown had been looking to mix it up with someone all game long and Clarke MacArthur had enough, giving Brown a nice tomahawk chop to the leg which set everything off. Brown then grabbed on to MacArthur and a melee ensued as all the players on the ice got involved. Adam Keefe paired off with Michael Ryan and Nathan McIver with Rob Globke. Wade Flaherty left his crease to join the mix-up as he was trying to pull the extra player off of Mike Brown. Unfortunately Wade Flaherty injured himself as the Rochester player fell on top of him trapping his leg awkwardly beneath him. Drew MacIntyre had to step in to replace the veteran.

Once the officials finally broke everything up and sorted out all of the penalties the teams were ready to finish off the last :35 seconds of the game.

Off the draw the play went behind the Moose net where the second round of the battle royal started. Both Prestin Ryan and Nathan Smith found dance partners this time as neither team seemed ready to wilt in the physicality department.

All in all 88 penalty minutes were handed out in the final :30 of the game which sets up what should be a spirited affair tomorrow night in the rematch.

What's Next

  • The Moose host the Americans tomorrow night at the MTS Centre, in a special tribute game to Hockey Canada. The Moose will wear a special third jersey similar in style and colour to the current jerseys worn by the National Junior Team at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Leksand, Sweden and by the men’s and women’s National Teams at the most recent 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Six of these jerseys will be auctioned at the game on the main concourse level. Prior to the game, two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner and Winnipeg native Jennifer Botterill will be on hand to help unveil and raise a special banner recognizing the 2007 World Women’s Hockey Championships to be held at the MTS Centre from April 3rd to 10th, 2007. The Hockey Hall of Fame will also have a display of many international hockey items and memorabilia set up in the concourse that night, including such things as the Canada Cup and the World Cup trophy, among others. There will also be numerous World Women’s Hockey Championships giveaways throughout the course of the game between the Moose and Amerks.
