Moose lose marathon shootout 4-3

By Travis Kondratuk
www.moosehockey.com

For the second straight game the Moose and Bulldogs needed more than 60:00 to decide the game. This time not even OT could decide things as the Moose failed to capitalize on a powerplay in the extra frame. The two teams went to a shootout where it took ten shooters from each side to finally declare a winner. Matt D'agostini scored the game-winner as he roofed a shot over the glove of Wade Flaherty. Mike Keane had a chance to tie it, but Yann Danis made a nice save with his left pad to steal the extra point for the visitors. That point means the Bulldogs have regained sole possession of second place in the North Division standings. The Moose will not have to wait too long for redemption however, as their first game back after Christmas is against the very same Bulldogs in Hamilton.

First Period

Corey Locke snuck in behind the Moose defence and was fed a great breakaway pass by Jean-Philippe Cote, where he broke in on Wade Flaherty and beat him low to the blocker side to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at 6:02.

Yann Danis came out to the top of his crease to make a save on an Alex Edler slapshot, but the rebound bounced right to Mike Keane who was able to stuff the puck into the wide open net before Danis could recover. The game-tying goal came 1:47 after the Bulldogs had jumped out to the early lead.

Nathan McIver and Zack Stortini got into a scrap behind the play, something that was brewing from an earlier incident in front of the Moose crease. McIver got his arm free and was raining blows on Stortini who was winding up for one big shot which he just missed connecting with. Stortini did catch McIver with a punch that caused him to lose his balance a bit, and the two players separated. The linesmen wanted to step in but McIver and Stortini still wanted to continue with round two. The players squared off once again, but waited too long and the linesmen finally stepped in to break it up.

The Moose heavily outshot the Bulldogs 12-3 but could manage no better than the tie after one period.

Second Period

Andrei Kostitsyn took a boarding penalty as he hammered Maxime Fortunus from behind in the Moose zone to give the Moose a powerplay opportunity.

The Moose struggled to get going with the man-advantage, but with just :10 left on the powerplay Alex Edler fired a shot on net and the rebound came out to Shaun Heshka at the edge of the right face-off circle where he potted his first goal of the season to give the Moose a 2-1 lead at 5:25 of the second period.

Maxime Fortunus and J.J. Hunter took consecutive minor penalties to give the Bulldogs an extended powerplay advantage. The Moose were able to kill both penalties off without incedent and continued to cling to their one-goal lead.

Third Period

Andrei Kostitsyn tied the game for the visiting Bulldogs as he picked up a loose puck behind the net and then tried to turn and feed a pass out in front of the Moose net. The puck deflected off Patrick Coulombe's skate in the crease, and past a helpless Wade Flaherty to tie the game at two. Mikhail Grabovski drew the lone assist on the game-tying goal at 5:09 of the third period.

Brandon Reid restored the lead for the home-side as he burried a rebound into the open cage. Jason Jaffray came down the left wing and fired a shot on Yann Danis. Jaffray took a second whack at it and the rebound bounced out to Brandon Reid who's initial shot was blocked in the crease by Dan Jancevski, but the rebound fell to Reid a second time and this time he made no mistake as he lifted the puck high into the net.

The lead was short lived however, as Duncan Milroy fired a shot on Wade Flaherty that he was able to stop, but the rebound fell at the top of the crease where Mikhail Grabovski lifted the puck up-and-over the sprawling goalie. The goal came exactly 3:00 after the Moose had regained the lead.

Andrei Kostitsyn took a hooking penalty with :32.5 seconds left in the third period to give the Moose a glorious chance to win it in regulation. Bulldog's coach Don Lever was so incensed with the call, that he took a game misconduct and was forced to leave the ice.

The Moose could not capitalize before the end of regulation and for the second straight time veresus Hamilton, overtime would be needed.

Overtime

The Moose started the overtime period on the powerplay, but once agian seemed reluctant to shoot the puck. The team did get a few shots through , but most were either blocked in front or missed the net altogether. The Bulldogs were able to kill-off the penalty and dodge a huge bullet.

The overtime period decided nothing and a shootout was needed to see who would take home the extra point in the standings.
