MacIntyre shines as Moose blank Peoria

By Travis Kondratuk
www.moosehockey.com

Drew MacIntyre looked extremely sharp, particularily in the first period when he made 16 of his 33 saves on the night to earn his first shutout of the season and his first as a member of the Moose. The Moose special teams deserves honourable mention as the Moose powerplay and especially their penalty kill looked very strong holding the Rivermen 0-for-7 on the game. The Moose now head to Texas for a four-game road trip that will see them play Houston and San Antonio twice each.

First Period

Adam Keefe decided to set the tone early as he dropped the gloves with Peoria defenceman Doug Lynch just 1:00 into the game. Keefe got Lynch's helmet off early and landed a few more shots to get the referees decision in this one.

With Joe Rullier in the box for slashing, Drew MacIntyre came up with a few huge saves to keep the game tied as the Rivermen were pressing on their powerplay.

The Moose continued to get themselves into penalty trouble as J.J. Hunter and then Mike Brown took back-to-back minor penalties to give the Rivermen a 2-man advantage. Drew MacIntyre came up big again making the crucial saves when the team needed them.

Drew MacIntyre was the difference in the first period as he made 16 saves, many of them spectacular to keep the Moose in the game. The Moose were outshot a whopping 16-1 in the first, the fewest shots in a period this season for the team. The one shot on net ties an all-time low for shots in a period at home for the Moose, the last time Manitoba only managed one shot in a period at home was Feb. 21/03 versus the Houston Aeros, in the third period of a 3-3 tie.

Second Period

Joe Rullier was assessed a 5:00 boarding major just :32 for a hit on Peoria winger Trent Whitfield deep in the Moose zone. Rullier was also given a game misconduct on the play as Whitfield was split wide-open from the hit.

The Moose powerplay continued to look strong and MacIntyre made the saves when called upon as the team was able to kill off the major penalty without incident.

The Rivermen got into some penalty trouble of their own as Cam Keith and Roman Polak took consecutive minors for the visitors giving the Moose a 2-man advantage. The home squad made the most of the opportunity as Jason Jaffray scored his 16th goal of the season on just the second shot of the game for the Moose. Brandon Reid, playing the point on the Moose powerplay, fed a pass down low to Brad Moran who spotted Jason Jaffray skating in back-door on the Peoria net. Moran fed a nice cross-ice pass to Jaffray who one-timed home his 6th powerplay marker of the season at 7:46 of the second period.

The Moose still remain heavily outshot 24-5 after two periods, but thanks to their 2nd ranked penalty kill they have managed to hold the visitors off the scoresheet, and lead 1-0 after two.

Third Period

Brad Moran did a strong job forechecking in the Peoria zone, stealing the puck in behind the Rivermen goal and feeding a beautiful pass to Nathan Smith who was streaking towards the goal. Smith made no mistake firing home his sixth goal of the season to put the home team up by two goals. The goal came at the 8:42 mark of the final period.

J.J. Hunter scored his second goal of the season for the Moose into the empty net as the Moose finished off the two-game sweep at home of the Peoria Rivermen.

The 12 shots on goal for the Moose ties the lowest shot output by the team in a game ever. The last time the Moose managed only 12 shots on goal was at Kansas City on Apr. 14/01 in a 5-4 victory. This sets an all-time low for shots at home for the Moose.

Moose scratches: Prestin Ryan, Marc-Andre-Bernier, Alexandre Bolduc

Rivermen scratches: Konstantin Zakharov, Zack FitzGerald, Rocky Thompson
