Moose lose 5-2 in Philly

By Travis Kondratuk

The Moose tried to get themselves back in the game clawing within a goal a couple of times, but a shorthanded goal by Ryan Potulny restored the two-goal lead for the Phantoms and they added an empty-netter for a 5-2 victory. The Moose split their season series with the Philadelphia Phantoms with two wins apiece. The loss moves the Moose record to 10-10-3-2 on the season.

First Period

Mark Cullen fed a pass from behind the Moose net that Matt Ellison one-timed high glove-side on Drew MacIntyre to give the Phantoms a 1-0 first period lead. Frederik Cabana drew the second assist on Ellison's second goal of the year at 9:03 of period one.

With the teams playing 4-on-4 hockey thanks to coincidental minor penalties to J.J. Hunter and Pete Zingoni, Brandon Reid had a good scoring chance to try and tie the game for the Moose. Reid split the Phantoms defense with a nice move but Martin Houle stopped his backhand shot to keep his team up by a goal.

The Moose went 0 for 2 on the powerplay in the first period and were outshot 12-7 by the Phantoms.

Second Period

The Moose started the period strong, as with some great forechecking they kept the Phantoms pinned in their own zone for the first minute of the period. Unfortunately they could not generate any quality scoring chances from their hard work.

With the Phantoms pressing in the Moose zone Drew MacIntyre made a series of several good saves to keep his team within a goal.

At the 4:33 mark of the period, Adam Keefe and Gino Pisellini got into a terrific scrap in the Phantoms zone. Both players were swinging for the fences as the two wingers took turns landing and receiving bombs. The two combatants went at it for a solid :45 until Keefe finally got the upperhand, pulling Pisellini's jersey over his head and tagging him with a couple of rights before the linesmen jumped in to separate them.

Matt Ellison scored his second goal of the game at 11:02 of the second period, as he took a nice cross-ice pass from Niko Dimitrakos and wristed a shot that just squeezed through the pads of Drew MacIntyre to put the Phantoms up 2-0.

The Moose continued to press to try and get on the scoreboard, but they could not beat Phantom's goalie Martin Houle.

Third Period

Mike Keane, playing in his 1400th professional hockey game, capitalized on a rebound in front of the Phantoms' goal to get the Moose within a goal. Brandon Reid fired a shot on net that Martin Houle stopped initially but the rebound bounced out in front of the crease where Keane coralled the puck with his stick and whacked it past Houle for his fourth goal of the year. Reid and Heshka drew the assists on the goal at 8:15 of the third period.

At 11:49 of the period, Matt Davis finished off a 2-on-1 break with Ryan Potulny to restore the two-goal lead for the Philadelphia Phantoms. Potulny, skating down the left-hand boards fed a cross-ice pass to Matt Davis who outwaited Drew MacIntyre and wristed a shot over the Manitoba netminder.

J.J. Hunter took a pass from Brandon Reid in the slot and fired home his first goal as a member of the Manitoba Moose pulling the team within a goal of the Phantoms at 13:17 of the third.

Ryan Potulny stole the puck just inside the Phantoms blue line and broke in on a shorthanded chance. Potulny fought off the backchecking Moose player and chipped the puck over the shoulder of Drew MacIntyre to restore the two-goal lead for the Phantoms. The shorthanded goal was the ninth shorty the Moose have surrendered this season.

Scott Arniel called his timeout with 1:30 left to try and get the team ready for a last minute push.

The Phantoms fired several shots at the empty net but failed to hit the mark. The Moose continued to press for a goal, but with :11 left the Phantoms' David Printz finally flipped a shot that trickled into the vacant Moose net to seal the victory for the Phantoms.

The Moose finish their four-game road trip going 2-2-0-0, winning one and losing one in both Philadelphia and Hershey. The Moose now return home for a four-game home stand starting Tuesday versus the Rochester Americans.
