By Travis Kondratuk

The Moose played a spirited game but fell just short, losing 4-2 to the Hershey Bears in their first ever meeting. The loss ended the two-game win streak by the Moose. The Moose can take away some good from the game, knowing they played very well against a team that has yet to lose on the road and has only lost one game in regulation all season. The rematch goes tomorrow night at the MTS Centre, game time is 7:30 CDT.

First Period

The home team came out all pumped up for their first meeting with the Bears as right from the opening face-off the Moose had the Bears pinned in their own zone for almost the entire first two minutes. The pressure resulted in Hershey's first penalty of the game, an interference call on Jamie Hunt. The Bears were able to limit the Moose power play to one good scoring chance off the stick of Nathan Smith.

The Moose truly looked sharp, making some of the best first passes out of their own zone all season.

Flaherty made a nice save on Bears winger Chad Wiseman who was fed a nice pass into the middle of the ice, but Flats stuck out his left pad to make the save and keep the score tied at zeroes.

Matt Kendricks capitalized on one of the Bears' few quality scoring chances of the first period, as with just under one minute to play he wristed a shot on net that beat Wade Flaherty just inside the left post. Flaherty appeared to be distracted by Alexandre Giroux who was parked in front of the Moose net. Timo Helbling and Manitoba native (Winkler) Eric Fehr drew the assists on the goal.

The late goal gave the Bears a 1-0 lead after one period of play with the Moose leading 7-6 in shots.

Second Period

Just :08 into the period Wade Flaherty made a great save as Dave Steckel was sent in all alone right off the opening face-off. Steckel tried to go high on the glove side but Flaherty was able to snag the puck out of the air.

Unbelievably, Steckel was sent in on his second breakaway in the first :30 as Eric Fehr made a long stretch pass from his own blue line to send Steckel in all alone on the left wing. This time The Hershey centre decided to go low on Flaherty as he slid a backhand that just squeezed under the pads of Flaherty. Putting the visitors up by two early in the second period.

Prestin Ryan sent in all alone with a full head of steam made a nice move on Hershey netminder Frederic Cassivi, but the Bears goalie made an amazing glove save as Ryan tried to roof a backhand high to Cassivi's glove side.

The Moose had a couple of good scoring chances, the first generated off some great hustle by Lee Goren and then another chance that was defelected of a Hershey defenders stick but Cassivi was able to come up with the save on both opportunites keeping the Bears up by two.

Prestin Ryan, doing a good job with the extra ice-time he's been afforded thanks to call-ups and injuries, drew a penalty that put the Moose on a 2-man advantage. The Moose struggled with the 2-man bonus, but after the first penalty expired Maxime Fortunus fired the puck into the Hershey zone with both teams changing. The puck took a crazy bounce and drifted right out into Cassivi's crease, but the Hershey netminder was looking behind the net expecting the puck to go around the boards which allowed Lee Goren to jam the puck in past Cassivi before he was able to react. The Moose goal was another power play marker, the eighth of their last nine goals scored. Fortunus and Wade Flaherty drew the assists on Goren's third goal of the season.

Rick Rypien was given a goalie interference penalty in the last minute of the second that will carry over to the start of the third period.

Third Period

The Bears restored their two-goal lead as Lawrence Nycholat scored his second goal of the season, a power play marker with Dustin Wood in the box for hooking. Nycholat snuck in back-door and Joey Tenute fed a pass that was deflected in the air. Nycholat gloved the puck down and blasted a shot high on Wade Flaherty.

Brandon Reid took a long pass from Lee Goren and beat two defenders before roofing a backhand to the blocker side of Frederic Cassivi. The goal draws the Moose within a goal of the Bears with just under ten minutes to play. Reagan Rome drew the second assist his first point of the season for the Moose.

The Moose came close on a few chances and had some sustained pressure in the Hershey zone but were unable to beat Cassivi.

With the Moose down 3-2 and the face-off upcoming in the Moose zone to the right of Flaherty, Scott Arniel called time-out to get the team set for the important draw. The Moose were eventually able to get the puck out of their zone and Flaherty came out to give the Moose the extra attacker. The Moose got the puck down low in the Hershey zone but were unable to get a shot on the Bears' net.

Off a neutral zone face-off with under :30 to play, the Bears gained control of the puck and fired a long shot on the empty net, scoring into the vacant cage. Chad Wiseman scored the empty netter with just :06 to play in the game to ice the victory for the visitors, moving Hershey's road record to a perfect 7-0.

The Moose played a spirited game but fell just short, losing 4-2 to the Hershey Bears. The loss ended the two-game win streak by the Moose.
