By Travis Kondratuk

The Griffins down 2-1 with just under two minutes to play, pulled their goalie to try and notch the equalizer. The Moose were able to stave off the Griffins onslaught however, and earn their first back-to-back victories of the season. The win moved the Moose into third place in the North Division standings with 13 points, one point behind Grand Rapids.

First Period

The Moose came out fired up as immediately off the opening face-off they got the puck in deep in the Griffins zone and got some good scoring chances. First Jannik Hansen had fired a quick shot from the left side of the Griffins goal and then Lee Goren was robbed by Jimmy Howard on what looked like a sure goal. Goren was fed a nice pass from behind the net that he one-timed on Howard but the Griffins goalie was able to make the pad save.

Flaherty stoned Josh Langfeld in close as the Moose were killing a penalty to Matt Craig for holding. Flaherty made a few more great saves on the same power play once on Brocke Radunske right in front of the net and then on Ryan Oulahen also at point blank range.

Goren scored his second goal of the season to put the Moose up 1-0. Shaun Heshka, just called up from Victoria, fired a shot on net that Jimmy Howard could not control the rebound on and Lee Goren went hard to the net chipping the puck over a sprawling Howard. Prestin Ryan drew the second assist on the goal at 6:15 of the first period. The even strength goal broke the streak of six straight power play goals scored by the Moose.

With Brandon Reid sitting in the penalty box for tripping, Prestin Ryan and Nathan Smith broke in on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush. Ryan sucked in the defender and fed a flip pass to Smith who just fanned on the opportunity.

Then Wade Flaherty took over as the Griffins had some great chances on the power play. First Josh Langfeld and Matt Ellis broke in on a 2-on-0 breakaway from centre ice that Flaherty made a terrific blocker save on. Then only seconds later he stoned Derek Meech by slamming the five hole shut. The Griffins had broke in on a 3-on-1 where Matt Ellis fed a nice pass across to a wide open Meech in front of the crease but Flaherty was up to the task, keeping his team up by one.

Both goalies were the story of the first period as they made some great saves on several quality scoring chances for their respective squads. A very entertaining period overall, as the Moose lead 1-0 after one.

Second Period

Lee Goren's cross-checking penalty at 19:01 of the first carried over to the second period putting the home team on the penalty kill for the first minute.

With Dan Smith in the box for holding the Griffins were able to chip the puck off the left wing boards where Matt Hussey broke in all alone on Wade Flaherty. Hussey skated across the face of goal snapping a shot on net that Flaherty was able to stop but Hussey was able to slap the rebound past the Moose netminder to tie the game at one. The goal came at 10:23 of the second with Matt Ellis and Kyle Quincey drawing the assists on the play.

With the Moose on a power play of their own, Jason Jaffray broke in on a partial breakaway but Derek Meech was able to lift Jaffray's stick before he could get a good shot off, both players went crashing into the Griffins net.

Both teams had some good opportunities to close out the period but neither team could score, leaving the game tied at one after two periods.

Third Period

The Moose notched another power play goal, their seventh power play marker of their last eight goals scored as Jason Jaffray potted his team-leading tenth of the season. Jessie Schultz backhanded a nice pass from between the face-off circles to a wide-open Jaffray in front of the Griffins net. Jaffray with his back to Jimmy Howard, backhanded a shot high to the glove side putting the home team back in front 2-1. Brad Moran carried his point streak to three games with the second assist on the goal at 1:04 of the third.

The Griffins pulled their goaltender with just under two minutes to play to try and draw even with the Moose. Grand Rapids coach, Greg Ireland called time-out with :31 remaining in the game. But the Moose were able to hold off the Griffins attack and earn their first back-to-back victories of the season. Moving them into third place in the North Divisionone point behind Grand Rapids.
