Grand Rapids win 5-4 in shootout

By Travis Kondratuk

With the score tied at 4, overtime decided nothing, and a shootout was needed to decide who went home with the extra point in the standings. The Griffins won the shootout, scoring on two of their first four shooters, while the Moose could only manage one goal in five tries. The Moose played hard for the entire game, and Brandon Reid who was the odd veteran out last night, played his most inspired game of the season. The Moose were able to take one point out of Grand Rapids and now return to Winnipeg where they will face the Griffins for two more games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

First Period

The Moose came out with a lot of jump looking determined to improve on their play from last night. Before the game was even a minute old Manitoba had a flurry of action in front of the Griffins' net, where Jimmy Howard started right where he left off last night by keeping the Moose off the score sheet. Howard made two great saves first off of Prestin Ryan's stick and then off Rick Rypien as he dug the puck out of a scrammble but could not beat the Griffins' goaltender.

Brad Moran scoring his first goal since sustaining an eye injury on October 13th gave the Moose the early lead in Grand Rapids. The power play marker was the fifth goal of the season for Moran. Joe Rullier and Brandon Reid drew the assists on the goal at 11:14 of the first period.

The Moose took a 2-0 lead as Nathan Smith capitalized on another power play. The second power play marker in three chances for the Moose. Jannik Hansen and Patrick Coulombe assisted on the goal at 14:17 of period one.

Josh Langfeld scored from a tough angle at the right side of the Moose net to bring the Griffins within a goal. Kip Miller threw the puck back against the direction of play from behind the net, leaving just enough room at the far post for Langfeld to squeeze the puck past MacIntyre. The goal came at 15:57, with Miller and Jonathan Ericsson getting the assists.

Darryl Bootland took an elbowing penalty late in the period which the Moose could not capitalize on, but the remainding 1:19 would carry over to the second period.

The period ended with the Moose leading 2-1 on the scoreboard and 15-9 on the shot clock.

Second Period

The Griffins cleared the puck out of their zone just as the penalty to Bootland was expiring. Drew MacIntyre had come out of his net to intercept the clearance but Bootland beat him to it. MacIntyre dove to try and poke the puck off Bootland's stick which disrupted the Griffins' forwards' concentration just enough as he misfired on the wide open Moose net.

The Moose got into penalty trouble as Jannick Hansen, Mike Keane, and finally Nathan McIver all took minor penalties. The Griffins were able to make the Moose pay for their mistakes as Kip Miller scored a power play marker at 8:54. Josh Langfeld fed a nice pass from the side of the Moose net out to the slot where Miller one-timed the puck past a helpless MacIntyre.

Joe Rullier restored the lead for the Moose as he scored the third power play goal of the game for the Moose. Rullier wristed a shot from the point that handcuffed Jimmy Howard. Nathan Smith and Jannik Hansen got the assists on the goal at 13:15, Rullier's first of the season.

With Grand Rapids shorthanded the puck was chipped out of the Griffins' zone where Brendan Brooks outraced three Moose players to the puck and broke in all alone on Drew MacIntyre, beating him low to the blocker side. The goal tied the game at three.

The game was back and forth for the entire period with the two teams heading into the third tied at three.

Third Period

Brad Moran put a shot on net as he came down the right wing, where Jason Jaffray going hard to the net bunted the rebound out of mid-air with the shaft of his stick past Jimmy Howard. The goal was the team-leading eighth for Jason Jaffray and the fourth power play goal of the night for the Moose. Brad Moran earned his second point of the night on the go-ahead goal.

A point shot by Dan Syvret deflected off Scott Barney in front of the Moose net and fell right to the skates of Kip Miller who made no mistake as he slapped the puck home to tie the game at four goals apiece. The goal, Miller's second of the night, was officially an even strength goal although the penalty to Tyler Bouck had just expired a second earlier.

The teams could not decide a winner before the end of regulation and with the score tied at 4 the game would need overtime.

Overtime

The Griffins took a penalty early in the overtime period to put the Moose on a 4-on-3 advantage. However the Moose took their second bench-minor of the game for too many men to create a 3-on-3 situation with :49 gone in the Moose power play.

Referee Jamie Koharski wasn't afraid to make the calls in overtime as he caught Nathan McIver for holding and then Matt Ellis for tripping within a few seconds of each other. The penalties created a lot of extra ice in the overtime period but neither team was able to net the winner.

A shootout would be needed to decide who goes home with the extra point in the standings.
