Howard shuts the door

The Moose, facing the Griffins for the first time since losing Game 7 of the 2006 North Division Final, were looking to exact some revenge at Van Andel Arena on Friday. The game, the first of four in six days versus the Griffins, did not go as planned for Manitoba as Jimmy Howard earned his first shutout this season and the third of his career in a 4-0 defeat of the Moose. Even though they battled hard, penalties and strong goaltending by Howard limited the Moose chances. The Moose will not have to wait long to get another crack at the Griffins however, as the two teams meet again on Saturday. Game time is 6:00pm CDT.

First Period

The Griffins scored on their first official shot on net as Kyle Quincey fired a rolling puck that seemed to change direction at the bottom of the face-off circle finding its way past Wade Flaherty.

Valterri Filppula put the Griffins up by two when he was left alone at the side of the Moose net. Jonathan Ericsson fired a shot from the point that was deflected on its way to the goal. Flaherty was able to make the initial save, but the rebound was kicked straight out to Filppula who was all alone at the right side of the Moose net for the tap-in. Jonathan Ericsson and Krys Kolanos drew the assists on the second goal of the night at 10:39. The goal was just the third shot on net for the Griffins.

With the Griffins on the power play Wade Flaherty kept his team within two goals
as he made an amazing save on Derek Meech who had snuck in back door from the point. Flaherty came sliding across post-to-post to rob the Griffins' defenceman at the side of the net.

Second Period

Jimmy Howard held the Moose off the score sheet as he made not one, but two great saves. Rick Rypien fired a shot point blank that Howard was able to stop and then he stoned Mike Keane on the rebound.

Josh Langfeld put the Griffins up by three goals as he pounced on a rebound off a shot from Kyle Quincey. Quincey took a pass from Krys Kolanos and fired a shot from the point that Wade Flaherty was able to stop, but Langfeld went hard to the net, gained control of the puck and flipped a sharp-angle shot from the right side of the net over a sprawling Flaherty at 3:31.

Dan Smith and Tyler Bouck got into a minor skirmish as the two players wrestled each other to the ice before either player was able to get a punch off.

Rick Rypien was assessed a 5:00 major for high-sticking to put the Griffins on the power play at 14:48. While killing off the penalty Jason Jaffray, trying to clear the puck out of the Moose zone, was a little too aggressive as he yanked the stick out of the Griffins' defenceman's hand in the process. Jaffray was handed a holding the stick penalty to put the Griffins on a two-man advantage for a full two minutes.

Dan Syvret was able to capitalize on the power play for Grand Rapids as he fired a point shot through a screen to put the Griffins up 4-0. Filppula and Scott Barney drew the assists on the power play goal. The goal came just as the two-man advantage had expired but just before the penalty to Rypien was over.

The Moose were outshot 21-11 after two periods, and trailed by four goals going into the third.

Third Period

Jonathan Ericsson put the Moose on their sixth power play advantage of the game as he was called for holding at 2:20 of the final frame. The Griffins were able to hold the Moose without a goal however, leaving Manitoba 0-for-6 on the power play.

The Moose pressured as much as they could, but penalties limited their chances and strong goaltending from Jimmy Howard kept them from getting back in the game. The Moose were able to close the gap in the shots department but could not get on the scoreboard as the Griffins held on for the 4-0 victory.

Wade Flaherty could not be faulted for the result as he made several terrific saves to keep the Moose in the game, especially early on. Griffins goaltender Jimmy Howard earned his first shutout of the season for Grand Rapids. The shutout was the third time this season that the Moose have been held off the scoreboard. The Moose now trail the Griffins by four points in the North Division standings.

Moose scratches: Alex Edler (called up), Mike Brown (broken thumb), Yannick Tremblay (knee), Adam Keefe (knee)
