Moose lose in a shootout 3-2

The Moose and Penguins needed a shootout to decide a winner Thursday night at the MTS Centre. Unfortunately for the Moose with the shootout tied, Ryan Stone had the game on his stick and made no mistake as he made a nice deke on Drew MacIntyre to earn the extra point in the standings for the visitors.

First Period

The Penguins jumped out to the early lead when Tom Gilbert wristed a shot through traffic that Drew MacIntyre was unable to control the rebound on. Matt Carkner pounced all over the rebound to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Rob Schremp got the second assist on the goal at 1:04 of the first.

Dennis Bonvie took the first penalty of the game, but the best chance on the Moose power play came for the visiting Penguins as Drew MacIntyre had to come up big when Connor James broke in on a shorthanded breakaway. James broke in off the wing and skated across the goal trying to get MacIntyre to open the five hole but the Moose goaltender was able to keep his stick on the ice to make the save.

The Penguins did a great job of minimizing the Moose scoring chances as with 2:00 left in the first the Moose had only registered one shot on net. Even though they had some pressure in the Penguins zone the visitors were able to either keep the Moose to the perimeter or block the initial shot.

The Moose had a few chances in the last minute of the period to finish with three shots in the first, but no goals.

Second Period

Jason Jaffray looked to continue his hot scoring streak as he broke in off the wing just 40 seconds into the period but Andrew Penner was in good position and made an easy save to hold the Moose off the scoreboard.

Alex Edler took the first penalty of the second period for hooking at 6:37. Until that point there were not many chances at either end as both teams had registered only one shot each in the period.

The Penguins got a few shots on their power play but the Moose did a good job of keeping the shots to the side boards and then clearing the rebounds quickly.

On a scrammble in front of the Penguins net several Moose players whacked away at the puck until finally Rick Rypien was able to bounce the puck off the post then off of Andrew Penner's pad, just trickling across the goal line at 13:12 of the second period. Mike Keane and Patrick Coulombe drew the assists.

Just after Rypien tied the score, rookie Jannik Hansen scored his second goal of the season after some great work by Lee Goren and Jason Jaffray down low in the Penguins' zone. Hansen fired a shot through traffic that found its way into the top corner of the net at 16:52. Andrew Penner did not see the shot as he was screened by several players.

The Moose managed to get the two goals despite only firing ten shots on the Penguins net through two periods.

Third Period

The line of Jason Jaffray, Lee Goren and Jannik Hansen continued to look good for the Moose early in the third, as Jaffray came across the Penguins blue line and fed a nice cross-ice pass to Goren who fanned on the puck with the goalie completely out of position.

Penguins forward Dennis Bonvie appeared to just dump a shot on the Moose net but Drew MacIntyre had the puck bounce out of his glove as he reached to snare it out of the air and the rebound fell right to the stick of Tyler Kennedy and he snapped the puck past MacIntyre, top shelf. Connor James was given the second assist on the goal at3:55 of the third.

The Moose wasted a glorious opportunity to take the lead as Penguins centre Ryan Stone was assessed a 5:00 major for high-sticking at 8:37. Unfortunately, the Penguins defence stepped up again and only allowed the Moose one shot on net during the power play.

Neither team could generate much after that as both teams played strong defensively. After regulation the Penguins held a 29-18 advantage in the shot department.

Overtime

Lee Goren looked to end it at 1:50 of the overtime period as he broke in down the right wing but Andrew Penner made a nice blocker save to keep the game tied.

With 1:02 left in overtime Jason Jaffray took a tripping penalty in the neutral zone to give the Penguins a great chance to steal the extra point.

The Penguins called a time-out to discuss their strategy for the power play but it didn't help, as the Moose were able to scrammble to keep the game tied and send it to a shootout.
