The Moose improved their record to 1-1-1-0 with a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Marlies, their first victory of the 2006-07 season. The Moose special teams was the difference as they scored 4 power play goals in 11 tries and did not concede on the penalty kill in the game leaving the Marlies 0 for 7. The victory was Scott Arniel's first as a head coach for the Moose. The victory also improved on Manitoba's stellar record vs the Marlies which now stands at 7-0-1-1.

First Period
Jesse Schultz broke in on a 2 on 0 with Brad Moran one minute into the game when the puck was deflected to Moran's stick. Moran came down the wing freezing Justin Pogge as he dished the pass across to Schultz who made no mistake on the one-time feed. The goal was Jesse's second goal in two nights, as he continued his torrent scoring pace against the Toronto Marlies. Schultz had 12 pts in 8 games played vs the Marlies last year including 8 goals. The assist for Moran gives him a three game point scoring streak to start the season.
The pride of Denmark, rookie Jannick Hansen, scored the first goal of his professional career as he took a cross-crease pass from Jesse Schultz. Justin Pogge made him work for it however, as he slid across the goal mouth and made an amazing save with his left pad on the first shot, but the rebound bounced right back to Hansen and he finished it off, much to his relief. Brad Moran and Jessie Schultz both got assists on the power play goal by Hansen to add to their point totals for the year.
At 17:27 Jason Jaffray jammed a puck through a scrum after a point shot from Yannick Tremblay found its way through traffic and caused both teams to jam the crease in front of Justin Pogge. Several players were slapping at the puck but Jaffray was the last to touch it, as he got credit for the second power play goal of the game for the Moose. Yannick Tremblay and Prestin Ryan both got assists on the goal as the Marlies penalty troubles put them in a huge hole.
The first period was a steady parade to the penalty box as both teams continued to commit stick infractions, and with the new no-tolerance rules both teams struggled to stay out of the box. The period ended with the Moose up 3-0 on the strength of two power play goals.
Second Period
Mike Keane took a boarding penalty at 2:08 of the second. But the Moose penalty killing was stellar, stifling the Marlies power play and leaving them 0 for 5 on the game.
The Marlies managed to generate the first sustained pressure in the Moose zone shortly after that power play ended however, and Robbie Earl was the beneficiary as he scored the first goal of the game for the Marlies. Brad Brown snapped a shot from the point that came down to the side of the Moose goal where Owen Fussey bated Joe Rullier to vacate the front of the net leaving Earl all alone in front to accept the pass and bury the first goal for the Marlies, chipping into the Manitoba Moose lead.
Seven seconds after the goal Rick Rypien hammered one of the Marlies from behind into the boards. Rypien was assessed a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for checking from behind, putting the Moose on the penalty kill once again. The Moose were able to kill off the major penalty and maintain their two goal lead.
The penalty parade continued in the second period, and at 13:36 as the Moose enjoyed a brief 4 on 3 advantage Brad Moran made a nice back-handed deflection on a cross-ice pass from Jannik Hansen. The goal was the third goal of the season for Moran and his third point of the night for the Moose. The assist for Hansen was the rookies second point of the night.
Jason Jaffray took exception to a hard hit against the boards, where he called out the Marlies' player Brett Englehardt at 17:51 of the period. The two started to exchange blows landing several good shots each as the fight ended in a draw. Jaffray went straight to the dressing room as he appeared to injur his hand when he landed a punch to the helmet of Englehardt.
Late in the second the Marlies once again cut the Moose lead to 2 goals, as Erik Westrum scored into an open net. On a disputed icing call the face-off was deep in the Moose zone. The Marlies won the face-off cleanly as Marc Moro drew the puck back to the point where Jaime Sifers fired a shot from the point that MacIntyre was able to make the initial save on but he was unable to control the rebound and Erik Westrum was able to slap the puck into the wide open cage.
Drew MacIntyre made a few excellent saves in the last 10 seconds of the second to maintain the two-goal Moose lead as the Marlies appeared to get energized by that late goal. The Moose lead 4-2 heading into the third period.
Third Period
Marlies' defenceman Justin Sawyer took a tripping penalty at 9:24 of the third to give the Moose their 11th power play of the game.
Justin Pogge made a few great saves on the Moose power play but lost control of his stick. Jason Jaffray took advantage as he tried to come out from behind the net where the puck deflected off David Cloutier's skate past Justin Pogge to restore the 3 goal lead for the Moose. Nathan Smith got the lone assist on the fourth power play goal of the game for the Moose.
Toronto Maple Leaf first round pick Jiri Tlusty made some nice moves before making a great pass to Martin Sagat who fired a bullet shot that rang off of the post as he tried to cut into the Moose lead only to be thwarted by the iron.
Drew MacIntyre appeared to be in great position for every Toronto shot as most of the pucks hit him right in the numbers and the Moose held on for the 5-2 victory, their first win of the 2006-07 season.
