October 6th, 2006 @ Copps Coliseum

The curse of Copps Coliseum continues for the Moose. Once again the Moose failed to get the victory in Hamilton which has been a difficult building for the Moose to win in. In front of a paltry home opening crowd of 4,633 fans the Bulldogs scored a shorthanded open-net goal to ensure the victory for the home squad with 10 seconds left in the game as the Moose pressed to tie it on the power play. Special teams played a big part of this game as both the Moose and the Bulldogs took numerous penalties throughout the game.

First Period

The Bulldogs got into penalty trouble early as Maxim Lapierre took a penalty on the opening face-off and Jonathan Ferland followed with a penalty 49 seconds later to put the Moose on a 2-man advantage for 1:11. The Moose quickly took advantage of the 5 on 3 as Jesse Schultz snapped a shot past Yann Danis from between the face-off circles after some nice passing on the power play. Jaffray and Coulombe drew the assists on the 2nd shot of the game for the Moose.

Julian Ellis making his first AHL start for the Moose made a huge glove save on Corey Locke as he walked in uncontested from the face-off circles on a Moose turnover in their own zone.

The Bulldogs tied the game on their third shot on goal as Duncan Milroy scored on the power play. Nick Kuiper was in the box for the Moose after taking a hooking penalty at 3:51 of the first.

Brad Moran scored a milestone goal as he notched his 2nd goal of the season, which was also the 100th of his AHL career. The goal seemed to surprise everyone on the ice as he snapped a quick shot from the slot that beat Danis glove side. Moran now has goals in his first two games as a member of the Moose. 98 of his goals came as a member of the Syracuse Crunch.

The Moose got themselves in to more penalty trouble as they took 4 straight penalties to end the first period, and the Bulldogs took advantage as Michael Lambert scored on the 13th shot of the period for Hamilton at 17:33 on a penalty by Maxime Fortunus. That goal tied the game at 2 and that's how the first period would end.

Second Period

Prestin Ryan took a hard hit just after the second period face-off, which he took exception to and immediately went after the Bulldogs player. This caused a major scrum in front of the Moose player's bench, where Ryan received an extra minor for charging to put the Bulldogs back on the power play.

The Moose successfully killed off the Bulldogs' man advantage and the play went end to end with few quality chances.

Mike Brown and Corey Locke got into a fight just outside the goal crease, but the linesmen jumped in quickly to tackle the two players and break up the scuffle before either player could get too many punches off.

Julian Ellis made a few fantastic saves first on a hard shot then he made a great glove save on the rebound, before dropping the puck behind the net for his team mate. The Moose quickly broke out on the counter attack where Rick Rypien scored his first goal of the season on the 22nd shot of the game for the Moose. The goal was an even strength goal, but the play all started with the great saves by Ellis.

But the Moose lead was very short lived as the Bulldogs scored a quick goal to once again tie the score this time at 3 goals a piece. Jonathan Ferland scored on a wrap-around just 30 seconds after the Moose had scored to take the lead.

Ryan O'Bryne took a boarding penalty at 17:31 of the second for the Bulldogs to give the Moose a chance to take the lead once again on the power play. However the Bulldogs were able to kill it off even though Manitoba had a few good chances, both Moran and Rypien failed to score a second goal in this game as Yann Danis made a few good saves to keep the game tied. The second period came to an end with the score tied at 3.

Third Period

Rick Rypien took an early penalty for goaltender interference as the Moose had some early pressure in the third. The Moose were able to kill off the penalty leaving the Bulldogs 2 for 9 on the power play for the game.

Zack Stortini who appeared invisible for most of the night scored the go-ahead goal to put the Bulldogs ahead for the first time in the game at 7:32 of the third. Kyle Chipchura and Andre Benoit both got their second assists of the game on the goal.

As the Moose were pressing to try and get the game-tying goal, Kyle Chipchura took a hooking penalty with 1:13 left to play in the game giving the Moose a glorious opportunity to notch the even up goal. Scott Arniel took a time-out to try and get his players on the same page with the man advantage, and to let Ellis know what to do should the Moose win the face-off.

After winning the face-off Ellis bolted from the Moose net to give Manitoba a 6 on 4 advantage. After coming ever-so-close on a few chances, Moran and Goren had the puck bounce right over their sticks on two separate opportunities in front of the Hamilton net, the puck sprung loose and Maxim Lapierre sprinted out of the zone breaking in short-handed on the empty Moose goal to score the shorthanded clincher with 10 seconds to play.

The Moose finished 1 for 7 on the power play while Hamilton finished 2 for 9, and also scored the shorthanded goal on the empty net. That was the second shorthanded goal the Moose have allowed already this season.
