The Moose tested Wilkes-Barre's number one penalty kill early after a Lefebvre interference penalty. The Moose took the lead with just over a minute played in the game after Darby got his hands on a big rebound after the initial Burrow's point shot.
The Penguins turned up the pressure with five minutes played in the first as they controlled the Moose zone and forced Wade Flaherty into three nice saves.
Wilkes-Barre took their second powerplay of the game after Prestin Ryan was sent off for tripping at 9:59. With some great penalty killing from Mike Brown and Jimmy Roy, the Moose were able to kill off the penalty without a shot on goal from the Penguins.
The Moose were forced to kill off their third consecutive penalty after Ryan Bayda took an interference penalty with just over two minutes to play in the first. Wade Flaherty robbed Armstrong on the doorstep to keep the game scoreless.
Tomas Mojzis gave the Moose their second powerplay goal of the game as Ryan Bayda spotted him coming into the zone off the bench. Mojzis ripped a wrist-shot from the right point into the top left corner and in.
The first period finished with the Moose up 2-0 and the shots tied at ten.
Rick Rypien just about created a third Moose goal with five minutes gone in the second. He neatly blocked a Penguin's point shot, took the puck at the centre line, broke in on Sabourin and fed a nice pass across the crease that just hopped over the stick of a streaking Jesse Schultz.
Wilkes-Barre took their fourth powerplay of the game at 8:50 of the second after Mojzis was given a minor for slashing. Koltsov had a great chance to put Wilkes-Barre on the scorer's sheet as he received the puck all alone in the slot but ripped a slap-shot just wide of the Moose goal. The penalty expired with the score remaining 2-0 Moose.
Jimmy Roy made it 3-0 for the Moose at 13:38 of the second as, shorthanded, he stole the puck at the Penguins blue line, cut in front of Sabourin and slid the puck in.
With 1:06 to play in the second the Moose gave Wikes-Barre a two-man advantage for just over a minute after Roy and Mojzis were called for minor penalties. The Moose were able to kill off the Roy penalty with seconds left in the period but headed into the third with Mojzis remaining in the box.
Tempers started to flare to end the second period after Wilkes-Barre put the puck passed Flaherty just after the horn had sounded to end the period. After the goal was called off the fireworks began with Bieksa and Lefebvre dropping the mitts. The two players exchanged heavy blows before Bieksa wrestled Lefebvre to the ice. The dispute was cleared up and the teams skated to their respective dressing rooms with the Moose up 3-0 and trailing in shots 21-18.
The Penguins had the remainder of their powerplay negated to start the third after Carcillo was called for a high-stick on McIver. The Moose took a powerplay of their own as the Mojzis penalty from the second period expired. Prestin Ryan had a great chance to put the game out of reach as he took a pass from Darby in the corner and ripped a shot just off the goal-stick of Sabourin.
Midway through the third the Penguins continued to lead the shot count 23-30.
The Moose took their fifth powerplay of the game after Carcillo took his third minor penalty of the game at 11:19. The Moose were unable to get anything going on this powerplay as they failed to score on their third powerplay in a row after two first period goals.
The Moose killed off the eighth Wilkes-Barre powerplay of the game with just over a minute to play after the Moose were called for too many men.
It took Wilkes-Barre 59 plus minutes to beat Flaherty but they finally did as Koltsov scored with 17 seconds left in the game. It was too little too late however as time expired and the Moose handed the Penguins their first regulation loss of the season.
